ST STEPHENS BOROUGH VETERANS V PLYMOUTH ARGYLE VETERANS Saltash based local football team St Stephens Borough celebrate ten years as a football club at the end of the 2007/08 season. As part of the club’s celebrations to mark the occasion they have arranged a veterans football match against Football League Championship side Plymouth Argyle for the Sunday of the May Bank Holiday weekend, Sunday, 4th May 2008. The game will take place in Kimberley Stadium, Saltash and will kick-off at 2.30pm. Plymouth Argyle have named a strong provisional squad for the match and supporters of a certain age will recognise no fewer that seven players who played for Argyle in their FA Cup semi-final against Watford in April 1984. Those players are: Gordon Nisbet, John Uzzell, Chris Harrison, Leigh Cooper, Tommy Tynan, Andy Rogers and Mark Rowe. Harrison and Rowe have their own connections to Saltash as both went on to play for Saltash United and Harrison also had a spell managing the Ashes. Leigh Cooper also had a spell managing Saltash United. Also included in Argyle’s squad are former Arsenal goalkeeper Rhys Wilmot, Darren Tallon, Doug Anderson, Mark Damerell and Steve Davey. Borough’s squad will comprise of local players who worn the Borough shirt at some time during the ten years of the club. These will include the likes of Karl Arrowsmith, Kevin Fedrick, Shaun O’Melia, Rocky O’Rourke, Dave Rowse, Kevin Squires and Lee Stapleton who all played in the 1998/99 season and players from later seasons such as Martin Croft, Peter Footitt, Lee Manuel, Chris Pierce-Jones and James Prynn right up to current players Shane Blanks and Andy Wright. Goalkeeping duties be shared by two local legends in Gary Homer and Richard Keith. Current managers Steve Brown and Alistair Sampson will also be making an appearance. Managing the team will be Borough’s first ever managers Phil Bennett and Mark Montell.

Borough are extremely grateful to local referees Shaun Edge, Keith Olver and Colin Penhorwood who have agreed to be the match officials.

It promises to be a most enjoyable afternoon as the veteran Saltash players take on some of the most successful Plymouth Argyle players of years gone by.
