Saltash United 0 St Stephens Borough 1 - Tuesday, 9th March 2010

With a healthy crowd, including ex managers Steve Brown & Alistair Sampson, watching under the lights at Kimberley Stadium the long awaited game kicked off with Borough taking the game to the home side.

After 15 minutes it was clear that it would be a tight affair with Saltash getting plenty of players behind the ball and strong in the tackles. Borough, not fazed by this, continued to pass well and push the Ashes back reducing them to the long ball which they used for most of the game.

After 30 minutes Stuart Fort got hold of the ball inside the box and jinked and turned until manhandled to the ground leaving the referee no option but to point to the spot. Andy Wright picked up the ball and struck it to the keepers right, but the keeper did not read the script diving full length to deny Borough the lead.

In the second half much of the same play but after 15 minutes it was the Ashes who were awarded a penalty after their striker went down easily with his back to goal. Dave Greene came to the rescue after superbly diving to his right to get a hand on the ball and push it wide.

With 20 minutes to go the busy Jamie Walton-Gould latched onto a cross with his back to goal swivelled and rifled a volley from 10 yards out into the top right corner of the net.

The Borough management team thought the game was all over when Walton-Gould hit a shot into the side netting, thinking for a moment it was the back of the net. Borough continued to contain the long ball and saw out the game for a great evenings work.

Roche 1 St Stephens Borough 3 - Saturday, 6th March 2010

Borough started the game well and forced Roche on to the back foot from the whistle with relentless amounts of corners with plenty of shots raining in on Roche keeper who played really well to keep Borough out.

On 20 minutes borough unlocked the door with a superb corner from Andy Wright who hit it deep towards the back post where Max Parfitt did well to head back across the face of goal where who else but Stuart Fort was on hand to head home.

Borough continued to apply the pressure and soon after the first goal came the second when a great cross field ball found Matt Budd. He put a delightful through ball for Lewis Fedrick to latch on to, drive forward and chip the out rushing keeper.

Before the break Lewis O'Rourke stuck a fierce volley from 30 yards that rattled the bar and post sending the ball across the face of the goal on to the far post and out.

Borough started the second half well with Nathan Holliday scoring the third from 25 yards out when he found himself in space, took a touch to set himself and unleashed a rasper straight down the middle of the goal with to much pace for the keeper to handle.

Roche had a little rally and made keeper Dave Greene produce two fine saves one after another. but it was Greene who conceded a penalty to Roche with a push from a corner which was dispatched by Chris Julian to make it 3-1

Luke McPherson bravely put a challenge in when needed to stop a late goal threat leaving him needing the physio Sam Holliday to patch him up.

Both managers

were pleased with the way the game was controlled and look forward to the remainder of the season with confidence.

St Stephens Borough 3 Millbrook 2 - Saturday, 27th February 2010

Borough knew they had to be at the top of their game against a Millbrook who had a decent compliment of first teamers in after the first teams game was called off.

It was borough who came out of the blocks quickly with great play down the wings. It only took 10 minutes before the first goal was fired home. Nathan Holiday clipped a good ball into the menacing Matt Budd who hit it on the volley just inside the near post.

Three minutes later and Stuart Fort made it 2-0, heading home a superb Andy Wright corner.

With ten minutes to go to the interval Borough were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Fort stepped up and with a deft side foot curler beat the scrambling keeper by squeezing it just inside the post to extend Borough's lead to three.

Borough should have had the game sewn up in the first half as they had nearly all the play with the Millbrook keeper coming to their rescue more than once. Matt Budd was denied a superb second goal by a dubious offside decision.

Millbrook threw themselves a lifeline in the dying embers of the half as Leighton Bartlett crashed a fearsome drive home.

The second half was a pretty dull affair with most of the play in the middle of the park until ten minutes from time Will Swales challenged for the ball which flew at keeper Dave Greene. With none of the players or spectators thinking it a back pass Greene picked the ball up only for the referee to award a free kick.

Bartlett was sharp enough to take a quick free-kick and Richard Bond fired into the home goal.

Millbrook piled on the pressure looking for an equaliser but Borough held out for the remainder of the game to earn the three points.

St Stephens Borough 6 Nanpean 1 - Saturday, 20th February 2010

St Columb Major 1 St Stephens Borough 1 - Saturday, 6th February 2010

BOROUGH failed to make the most of St Dennis' defeat as they could only draw away to the division's bottom club who were left celebrating only their second point of the season, in 15 league games, at the final whistle.

The hosts had led through Luke Worrall until the final minutes when Matt Budd set up Stuart Fort to fire home a face-saving equaliser.

St Stephens Borough 6 Roche 2 - Saturday, 30th January 2010

Borough made a good start to the game and took control early on with some slick passing and build up play. With plenty of crosses and shots it was a surprise that it was still level after 25 minutes.

On 25 minutes Jamie Walton-Gould gave a glimpse of what was to follow as he produced a missile from 25 yards that rattled the cross bar with the keeper rooted to the spot.

A munuted later, clearly not happy with 25 yards out, Walton-Gould thought he would try his look from 30 yards and the ball flew through the air and in to the corner of the net to set Borough on their way.

on 33 minutes Andy Wright produced a crossfield ball of professional quality for Lewis Fedrick to chest down and drill the ball hard and low making the Roche 'keeper save superbly with his legs.

Captain Wright was the architect the second goal passing a through ball for Stuart Forrt to hit the roof of the net from pressure from the keeper.

Willl Borough seemingly well in control of the game and a high punt into the Borough box was not dealt with first time leaving Alistair Sinclair one on one. The referee deemed he had used to much body strength and gave a penalty on 43 minutes which Matt James cooly dispatched to bring Roche back into the game.

The second half was only five minutes old when Fort played a ball down the wing for Sam Ticehurst to fire in a cross of sheer quality where Lewis O'Rourke headed home at the back post. to extend Borough's lead to 3-1. Fort also rattled the bar from 30 yards out.

On 70 minutes in O'Rourke provided the cross for Fort to bravely head home under pressure from the visitor's keeper and centre back with all of them ending up in a heap in the net.

Five minutes later Matt Budd was judged to have made contact in the box and the ref pointed to the spot to give Roche a second penalty. Dave Greene stood tall and saved the first effort only for the referee have the penalty. re-taken. Matt James didn't miss this time to bring Roche back to 4-2.

Late in the game Fort won the ball after a mix up at the heart of Roche defence, carried the ball forward and punished the mistake by slotting home for his hat trick.

He was not finished there as a poor back pass landed at his feet leaving him only the keeper to beat and finishing from out side the box with the outside of his boot to seal a 6-2 victory for Borough.

Manager John Busher was very pleased with the performance.

Nanpean Rovers 1 St Stephens Borough 3 - Saturdayy 23rd January 2010

Borough returned to winning ways with this deserved victory at Nanpean.

The home sided started well putting putting the Borough defence under pressure in the first ten minutes and 'keeper Dave Greene needed to save well with his legs to keep the scores level.

Borough then started to play some nice football on a heavy pitch with Andy Wright coming close with an efford that made the Nanpean keeper pull out an excellent save.

On 25 minutes he did it again, making another excellent save as Jamie Walton-Gould broke clear.

He was finally betean 5 minutes later as Will Swales intercepted a ball in defence and travelled into space and played in Walton-Gould. The 'keeper got a hand to his shot but Stuart Fort was on hand to put the ball away.

Borough were well in control of the game but gave away a free kick which Glyn James fired home to leave the scorers level at the interval.

Fort restored Borough's lead early in the second period, finishing off a superb Lewis O'Rourke cross.

Dave Greenw was forced to pull of a great reaction save from s deflected cross before Dave Wright beat a defender and smashed the ball home to ensure a 3-1 Borough victory.

St Stephens Borough 2 Edgcumbe 3 - Saturday, 9th January 2010

ARTIFICIAL surfaces may be the way forward as the only East Cornwall League game to be played at the weekend was on the 3G pitch at Saltmill.

However, unforunately it was not to be a day of celebration for the home side, with Edgcumbe winning an entertaining clash 3-2.

St Stephens Borough began the day level on points with Division One leaders Polperro, but ended in third place with their victorious opponents leaping over them into pole position courtesy of this notable victory.

Edgcumbe are in in their first season of East Cornwall football having finished last season as champions of the Duchy League but they have taken superbly to their new level of football.

Last week's 2-1 defeat at Plymstock left many pundits asking questions as to their ability to maintain a push for a second successive promotion but the side answered their critics at Saltmill.

Edgcumbe adapted well to the conditions which were rock-hard, despite the artificial surface, and it was a credit to both teams that they played the game in the right spirit.

It was Borough who were to make the initial breakthrough as the experienced Andy Wright saw his effort from the edge of the area fly into the top corner of the visitor's goal.

Edgcumbe came back strongly and were level before the break as Brett Shannon raced clear to fire home.

The visitors were now in the ascendency with Shannon firing against the post and Tom Hall heading on to the underside of the crossbar, but Edgcumbe claims that the ball had bounced over the liner were ignored.

Borough came at their visitors after the break but it was Edgcumbe who came closest to regaining their lead with Shannon once again cursing his luck as a header struck a post.

But Shannon's luck changed as he latched on to a John Harris through ball to fire his side ahead.

However, back came Borough, with Wright notching his second of the game with a superb lob to level the scores.

But the points were to find their way on to Edgcumbe's tally when McKenzie Arnold rose above the home defence to power his header into the home net and settle and enthralling contest.

St Stephens Borough 1 St Dennis 4 - Saturday, 12th December 2009

St Dennis continued their impressive start to the season by making it nine wins out of nine in the league with an away success over leaders St Stephens Borough.

The latest victory was down to some clinical finishing by St Dennis. Borough enjoyed their share of the possession but lacked the finishing touch.

St Dennis boss Dave Rickard said: "This was a really good result for us. They played the better football and kept possession.

"But we defended well, frustrated them and took our chances."

Clinical

Those views were endorsed by Borough's Phil Bennett, who added: "We played well but they were clinical in their finishing. They had four shots and scored four goals.

"But we are still on top of the table and we are looking forward to going to St Columb on Saturday."

St Stephens Borough are now only one point clear at the top of the table with second placed St Dennis having four matches in hand.

While Borough go to bottom club St Columb on Saturday, St Dennis face a trip to second from bottom Callington.

There was only one goal separating the sides at the interval with St Dennis taking the lead on the half-hour when Chris Brown hit the target with a free kick from 25 yards. Carl Rickard put St Dennis in control after the break, scoring his first when he outpaced the home defence and making it 3-0 when he found the net after cutting in from the left.

Borough's impressive football was rewarded when Stuart Fort pulled back a goal following a corner, but the home side were unable to build on that strike.

St Dennis had Ryan Hayhurst working tirelessly in midfield and they killed off any thoughts of a Borough recovery when Nigel White wrapped up the scoring with a far post header following a corner.

Man of the match: Ryan Hayhurst (St Dennis).

Porthleven 5 St Stephens Borough 0 - Saturday, 5th December 2009

South West Peninsula League Division One West outfit Porthleven proved to have too much in their armoury for their Borough in terrible conditions.

It took Port 30 minutes for Alan Thomas to give them the lead with Dan Stidwell adding a second five minutes later.

Borough came back in the second half with Stuart Fort forcing a good save out of the Port keeper before further goals from Jamie Thomson, Tom Wonford and Matt Fox completed the scoring.

St Stephens Borough 4 Callington Town 2 - Saturday, 28th November 2009

LEAGUE leaders Borough made the most of being one of only two games to be played to open up a four point gap over second place St Dennis.

The artificial pitch at Saltmill showed its worth in these conditions as although the players had to combat the driving rain the playing surface was perfect.

It took the home side less than a minute to open the scoring as Lewis Fedrick fired home a loose ball in the Cally area.

Borough had Alistair Sinclair making his debut after signing from Saltash United and there was also the welcome return of Daniel Thompson who started on he bench.

It was not until 10 minutes before the break that they added their second with Andy Wright finding the back of the visitor's net.

Callington threw themselves a life-line just before the beak as Shaun Palfrey's free-kick flew inside the near post and the visitor's shocked their high-flying hosts as Phil Burgoyne levelled the scores, early in the second half, from the penalty spot.

Dan Thompson, who had earlier been penalised for the penalty, made amends when he restored Borough's lead by taking advantage of a mistake by the visiting goalkeeper.

It was substitute Sam Ticehurst who ensured the vital three points for the home side when he evaded two challenges before slotting the ball home to complete the scoring.

Darren Bradley put in a typically tenancious midfield performance against his former club.

Plymstock United 4 St Stephens Borough 0 - Saturday, 21st November 2009

THE U’s announced their promotion intentions by inflicting a first defeat in 10 league games on the leaders at Dean Cross.

Managers Darren Evans and Steve Rowe have worked hard to assemble a team now mounting a serious promotion challenge.

Victory was sweet for the U’s who had lost 2-1 at Saltmill in the first week of the season, which was the beginning of Borough’s run of nine unbeaten games.

Heavy rain had made conditions difficult for both teams, but it was the U’s who adapted better, deservedly taking the lead when Chris Stoffle found Josh Hocking controlling the ball before firing past the Borough goalkeeper.

Plymstock were not content to sit on that lead and pushed forward in search of a second goal which duly arrived when Jamie Bass headed home Sam Luscombe’s cross.

Borough came back at their hosts with Stuart Fort and Jamie Walton-Gould both going close before the interval.

Plymstock continued to have the better of the exchanges after the break and it was no more than they deserved when Dan Ahearn headed home another precise Stoffle cross.

Saturday’s scoring was completed when Luscombe’s cross-cum-shot eluded the Borough keeper and sailed into the far corner of the net.

St Blazey 1 St Stephens Borough 1 - Saturday, 24th October 2009

Borough missed out on the opportunity to open up a five-point gap after this draw at Blaise Park.

St Blazey dominated the first half and it took some great saves from Dave Greene to keep the home side at bay. The eventually took a 40th minute lead when Mark Bird followed up on Ashley Steele's shot to score.

Borough upped the tempo after the break and took the game to the hosts.

The visitors should have been awarded a penalty after Stuart Fort was felled in the box and the ref pointed to the spot. Andy Wright placed the ball on the spot, only for the referee to spot the St Blazey linesman waving his flag. Following a consultation he changed his mind and gave a free kick to everyone's disbelief.

Borough hit back after the break, deservedly equalising on 75 minutes when Jamie Walton-Gould pounced after the home 'keeper made a great save from Max Parfitt's free kick.

Nathan Holliday made a super tackle when isolated in a do or die situation to keep the game level before Sam Ticehirst burst though with good skill to be left one on one with the St Blazey 'keeper. He beat the keeper but a recovering defender saved the ball from crossing the line.

In the last seconds of the game Walton-Gould had the crowd on its feet as he collected the ball and raced forward bearing down on home goalie. His shot went whistling passed the keeper but unfortunately passed the post as well.

Man of the match was Dave Greene.

St Stephens Borough 5 St Dominick 1 - Saturday, 17th October 2009

Borough moved clear at the top of the table after this comprehensive victory at Saltmill which took their run of league victories to eight on the trot.

Jamie Walton-Gould jinked on the edge of the box and laid a perfect ball across the box Dave Wright to fire Borough into a second minute lead. Wright was playing in an unfamiliar right side of midfield position.

St Dominick battled hard and it was new signing Darren Bradley who weighed in with the challenges and taking a few knocks for the team.

On 20 mins Dave Greene came to the rescue with a great one handed save form a corner to keep borough in the lead. Two minutes later Andy Wright was wheeling away as he struck a volley towards the top corner from the edge of the box but to everyone's amazement the keeper somehow got a hand to it to prevent the goal.

On the stroke of half time for Walton-Gould latched onto a through ball and volleyed from just outside the box into the far corner leaving the keeper with no chance this time.

Walton-Gould headed home Andy Wright's cross six minutes after the break, and although Mike Vanstone replied for the Saints, it was the Borough striker who was to complete a fine personal performance by notching his hat-trick after the St Dominick 'keeper made a great save from Stuart Fort's show.

Fort then headed home a George Stokes corner to complete the scoring.

Man of the match was Jamie Walton-Gould.

St Stephens Borough 4 St Ives Town 2 - Saturday, 10th October 2009

Borough found the visitors pacey wingers Chris Lock and Ross Duncan too hot to handle at the start of this match and it came as no surprise when Lock ran onto a through ball to put St Ives ahead on 13 minutes.

Borough found themselves two behimnd on 30 minutes and it was that man Lock again, on hand at the far post to finish.

Borough managers Phil Bennett and John Busher then switched to three at the back, pushing Max Parfitt into midfield, and it was that move that swung the game.

On the stroke of half time a good cross came in from the right where Lewis Fedrick ghosted in at the far post to head home to pull one back for Borough.

Captain Andy Wright was pulling the strings as he was playing further forward and it was he who latched onto a ball provided by Jamie Walton-Gould, who laid back in a congested area, for Wright to blast the ball home with his less favoured right boot to equalise in the 70th minute.

Dave Greene produced some superb saves at crucial times in the second half which deflated the visitors and it was Wright who came up with the goods again to put Borough ahead. Walton-Gould raced through bearing down on goal with the crowd all shouting shoot and when he seemed to have wasted his chance he turned his marker and laid an exquisite ball across the box into the path of Wright who bust a lung getting into the box to fire hard and low into the bottom corner of the net.

Late on Greene again came to the rescue again as he beat out a point blank shot to deny extra time but it was Max Parfitt who settled Borough nerves with a outstretched right foot into the bottom corner of the net to complete a 4-2 victory.

Andy Wright was man of the match and Dean Bradley made his debut.

St Stephens Borough 4 St Blazey 1 - Saturday, 3rd October 2009

Borough started this game well with a good tempo forcing St Blazey onto the back foot from kick off.

Having won a corner Andy Wright hit a wonderful inswinger for Max Parfitt to muscle in with a powerful header to put Borough into a 10 minute lead.

Borough continued to play with confidence but were rocked when the St Blazey winger hit an arrowed cross from the touch line which ended up leaving 'keeper Dave Greene in no mans land and with no chance of getting the cross which went into the far top corner of the net.

Borough continued to probe and St Blazey were battling hard to stay with Borough and it was Andy Wright again who unlocked the door with a fine pass into the path of the hard working Jamie Walton-Gould who side footed past the keeper to put borough 2-1 up.

Lewis Fedrick had a goal dissalowed for an alleged push and just before the break Greene was at hand to beat away a fiercely struck shot that looked top corner bound.

Borough's second half perfomance was first class as they dominated the game and after 15 minutes of the half were denied another certain goal as the referee did not see the ball clearly cross the line.

From another Wright corner Borough extended their lead as Stuart Fort headed down to beat the St Blazey keeper leaving him needing only one more goal to equal last season's tally of 16.

Borough dominated the half but Greene came to their rescue with two superb saves before Borough got their fourth. Lewis Fedrick sprinted forward to challenge the keeper who palmed the ball out which Fedrick got on to and laid the ball for Walton-Gould to controll and pass the ball into the far corner of the net.

The managers were very pleased with the peformance especially as St Blazey included several first team players.

Nanpean 3 St Stephens Borough 5 - Saturday, 26th September 2009

Phil Bennett and John Busher were looking for Borough to start on the fromt foot after the previous matches slow start and got an early lead when rightback Matt Budd arrowed a cross the the far post where Lewis Fedrick headed home.

It was a surprise that it took until the 40th minuted for Borough to go two up. Great work by Andy Wright and Tom Clark set up Stuart Fort to drill the ball home.

The second half was only five minutes hold when Fort extended the lead, curling the ball into the net from the edge of the box.

Any thoughts Borough had of coasting to the finish were brought to an uprupt end and Nanpean pulled two goals back in the next five minutes, the first following a disputed free kick.

Nanpean levelled the scores when Nathan Holliday appeared to give away a free kick outside the box but the referee pointed to the spot and the tie was all square.

Fort, who just cant seemed to stop scoring, put Borough ahead again when he controlled a Clark cross and passed the ball into the net.

Borough brough on subs Dave Wright and player manager John Busher and it was Busher who prevented another Nanpean equaliser with a tremendous last ditch tackle in the Borough penalty area.

Fellow sub Wright set up Fort to cooly chip the ball over the Nanpean 'keeper to end the scoring and see Borough home 5-3.

St Stephens Borough 2 Elburton Villa 1 - Saturday, 19th September 2009

Borough had their worst first half of football this season as Elburton imposed themselves on the game from the start and pinned Borough back into their own half for most of the period.

It was no more that they deserved when they went in half time with a 1-0 lead and it could have been more/

After a few choice words in the changing room from managers Phil Bennett and John Busher it looked like a different team had come back out onto the pitch as Borough responded well.

15 mins into the half Matt Budd, making a starting appearance at right back, took a free kick inside the Borough half and placed a great ball into the box which the 'keeper could not handle and parried out where Jamie Walton-Gould was waiting to volley in with the outside of his foot.

On 38 mins Matt Budd was at another set piece launching a throw to the backpost where Stuart Fort slipped his marker to head home.

Matt Budd collected a man of the match as he looked mature beyond his years putting in a great battling performance.

St Stephens Borough 2 St Dennis 5 - Saturday, 12th September 2009

ST DENNIS are still the only team to beat Borough this season as they completed a league and cup double over the Saltmill outfit.

Borough lost 4-1 away on the opening day of the season and found themselves 4-0 down before Andy Wright scored from the penalty spot.

Max Parfitt was Borough's other scorer with Carl Rickard, Lee Rickard (2), Richard Hawke and Ryan Hayhurst all on target for the visitors.

St Stephens Borough 3 Holsworthy 1 - 5th September 2009

A FIFTH consecutive victory keeps Borough level on points with St Dennis who are the only side to beat them this season.

A first half hat-trick from Stuart Fort, taking his season's tally to an impressive nine goals in six games, put Borough well in control by the break.

The home side continued to control matters in the second half and were unlucky not to add to their tally, Jamie Walton-Gould's effort coming back off the crossbar, before Holsworthy grabbed the solitary reply through a Richard Smith penalty.

Callington Town 1 St Stephens Borough 2 - 29th August 2009

This was not one of Borough's better performances but they still did enough to win the game.

Borough were without both the goalscorers from Millbrook in Andy Wright and Alex Haste with Shane Blanks coming in to replace the captain in the centre of midfield and youngster Matt Budd playing wide right in midfield.

Both side's went close in the first period when Lucus Skol's spectacular overhead kick hit the crossbar and Stuart Fort also hit the bar for Borough.

It was Skol who put the home side ahead on the hour mark leading to a tactical switch from Borough which saw them go three at the back and five in midfield.

The switch paid dividends at Borough proceeded to dominate the match. Firstly substitute David Wright headed home to equaliser from an excelled Matt Budd cross and then youngster was on hand at the far post to score the Borough winner.

Man of the match for Borough was Luke Hurlock, a rock at the centre of the defence.

Millbrook 1 St Stephens Borough 2 - 27th August 2009

Ten minutes later Alex Haste continued his good goalscoring run by heading home from close range after a good cross from Sam Ticehurst.

Borough were forced into changes at the interval and Millbrook pulled one back when a left footed rocket of a shot gave Dave Greene in the Borough goal no chance.

Millbrook could have equalised from the penalt spot after a foul by Max Parfitt but the chance was missed and the Borough defence remained solid for the rest of the game to earn a battling three points.

St Stephens Borough 6 Camelford 1 - 22nd August 2009

This was Borough's best performance this season as they ran out comfortable winners over Camelford.

Borough were out the blocks quicky and took the lead after only 7 minutes. Max Parfitt received the balll at full back and travelled up the pitch until closed down where he played the ball over the top of the Camelford fullback to Stuart Fort. Fort headed the ball towards goal and just as he was about to be closed down he unleashed a well driven shot into the top corner of the net for the first goal of the game.

Five minutes later Fort turned provider as he held the ball up, turned and played a defence spliting pass for Alex Haste to run on to at the edge of the box. With plenty still left to do Alex hit the ball first time hard. low and accurate, hitting the inside of the near post and going into the net to put Borough 2 up.

With a two goal cushion Borough began to play some good football and on 35 minutes, Fort played the ball with the outside of his foot for Jamie Walton-Gould to run on to. He took the ball into the box and dispatched it clinically into the bottom of the net giving him his first goal this season.

Five minutes before halftime Fort bagged his second when the Camelford 'keeper fumbled under pressure and the Borough striker flicked the ball into an empty net.

Dave Greene ensured that Borough went into the break 4-0 up as the Borough 'keeper had to adjust quickly to divert a shot come cross on to the bar and out.

Camelford pulled one back on the hour markl as a misplaced clearance fell kindly for a Camelford player who took full advantage of the chance presented to him.

The goal seemed to inspire the visitors as they tried to get back into the game and ten minutes later Borough restored the four goal advantage as Fort set up strike partner Walton-Gould to hammer the ball home.

With just over 10 minutes remaining Dave Wright put the Camelford goalie under pressure and he came out of the penalty area and handled outside the box to give Borough a free kick. Wright fainted to shoot but it was Fort who took it and the orough hitman struck a beauty into the corner of the net giving him his hatrick and another man of the match performance. Fort now has six goals in three games this season.

St Stephens Borough 2 Plymstock 1 - 18th August 2009

Borough started well playing neat football and having the better of the game in the opening exchanges.

Just 12 minutes in and some great link up play through the middle, saw a ball played in to Jamie Walton-Gould on the edge of the box to head down into the path of Stuart Fort, The Plymstock keeper came rushing out but Fort finished with an exquisite volley into the top corner of the net.

Plymstock were lever within two minutes as Sam Luscombe went through on a one on one with Borough 'keeper Dave Greene. Greene won the first exchange, saving the shot, only for Luscombe to finish the rebound.

Borough continued to press Plymstock back with probing football with some close efforts, none closer than Walton-Gould. After some good passing in midfield, Alex Haste crossed for him to acrobatically connect with a overhead kick that shaved the post.

After twenty-one minutes Tom Clark fired in a shot from outside the box which was too hot to handle for the keeper who only managed to parry the ball out to the oncoming Fort who smashed the ball into the net from twelve yards out.

Borough dug deep in the second half as Plymstock threw caution to the wind as they went for the equaliser and pushed Borough onto the back foot where Will Swales, Max Parfitt, Luke Hurlock, and James Tripp needed to stand up and be counted. However it was Borough and the confident Fort who had the first clear cut chance as he went through one on one with the keeper only to mishit his shot.

Plymstock continued to impose themselves on the game but mainly were reduced to long range efforts as the Borough defence stood firm.

Borough were denied a clear penalty late on when substitute Matt Budd was felled but the referee failed to see the foul.

Borough endured a tough second half and managers Phil Bennett and John Busher were pleased with the back four for weathering the storm. Man of the match was Stuart Fort.

St Dennis 3 St Stephens Borough 1 - 15th August 2009

Borough travelled without six squad players due to injury and unavailability and went down 3-1 to the Cornwall Junior Cup holders in their opening ECPL Division One fixture.

The home side dominated the first half and it was no surprise when they took the lead after twenty minutes when Lee Rickard drilled the ball home.

The second half started in a similar fashion and on the hour mark St Dennis were awarded a penalty which Carl Rickard took. Dave Greene appeared to have covered but it took a wicked bounce which too the ball over the Borough keeper and into the net.

Borough pushed Stuart Fort up front from midfield and began to force some saves out of the home keeper & seemed to be getting grips with the game when St Dennis broke clear and Carl Rickard scored his second.

Borough pulled a goal back near the end when Andy Wright's free kick was headed home by Fort but this was too little too late.

Man of the match was goalkeeper Greene without whose heroics the scoreline could have been worse.

St Stephens Borough 1 Looe Town 3

Borough looked the better side in the early exchanges but were aghast when after about 20 minutes a penalty was awarded against them.

A Borough player completely missed his kick whilst trying to clear the ball and then the ball bounced up and accidentally hit his arm.

The referee claimed that this was a deliberate act and a spot kick was given which calmly dispatch by the Looe captain.

Borough came back strongly and superb combination play between Stuart Fort and Jamie Walton-Gould ended up with Fort having a one on one with the keeper and making no mistake.

For the remainder of the half things turned a bit scrappy and going into half time 1-1 was a fair result although there was a couple of chances at each end.

The second half continued as the first half had ended with no real pattern to the game.

About 10 minutes in Looe were awarded a hotly disputed corner as the linesman had flagged for offside in the build up of play but was overruled by the referee.

From the resultant corner poor marking in the Borough defence gave Looe a free header and their number 8 made no mistake leaving the keeper no chance.

Borough upped the work rate after this and created numerous chances but could not convert any of them.

However, 10 minutes from time a long hopeful straight punt up the pitch caught the Borough's central defenders sleeping and Looe's centre forward nipped in to make it 3-1.

A general all round improvement is required if Borough are to get anything out of Saturday's first league game away at St Dennis.

St Stephens Borough 6 Saltash United 3rds 3

St Stephens Borough ran out deserved winners is this local derby against Saltash United's Duchy League side but the victory was marred by a serious injury to Borough's left back George Stokes who has broken his arm in two places and will be out for some time. The player is remaining positive and has told the managers that he will be at training with his cast on.

Borough named Andy Wright as team captain prior to the game and started the match fast out the blocks. They opened the scoring when, following a traing ground long throw routine, Alex Haste kept up his goalscoring run with a cute over head kick which guided the ball into the corner off the net.

Following the loss of Stokes Saltash equalised following some scappy defending which ended up with the ball bouncing off Nathan Holidays knee to leave a visitors forward on a one on one with Borough keeper Dave Greene which was cooly finished.

Holiday made amends with a good run down left and angled his body to deliver a through ball for Stuart Fort to run onto. Despite pressure from the Asjes defence he passed the ball into the far post with clynical percision.

Again Saltash came back and scored a good goal. Good build up play around the box led to the ball being played into Scott Summers for another one on one with Greene and he neatly chipped the ball over the Borough 'keeper.

Borough regained the lead when Dave Wright anounced himself back on the goalscoring scene with a delightful bit of skill. The ball was played into him with his back to goal, he flicked the ball one way and going the defender the other he was faced with just the keeper to beat and finished with a deleicate chip.

Max Parfitt fired in a free kick to the far post which Fort headed across goal finding Dave Wright in space to head home for his second and Borough's fourth before the halftime interval.

Borough made five changes at the interval but increased their lead when Andy Wright's corner found Jamie Walton-Gould who flicked the ball on for Fort to score with a header at the far post.

Saltash pulled one back as Borough made tactical changes to go with three at the back and three up front to see how they could cope with this formation and this did eventually pay dividents as both Walton-Gould and Luke Kelly hit the post before Fort found Walton-Gould on the edge of the box at an angle and he drilled the ball with venom into the far corner of the net leaving the Saltash keeper routed to the spot.

Borough managers Phil Bennett and John Busher were happy with the result and overall performance but the result was overshadowed by the injury to Stokes.

St Stephens Borough 4 Wadebridge Res 1

Borough got off to a fine start when after 10 minutes a mistake in the Wadebridge defence let Lewis Fedrick in on goal who calmly slotted past the advancing keeper.

Although Wadebridge were dangerous on the break Borough continued to stay on top for most of the half creating numerous good situatuons but were unable to increase their lead with both Jamie Walton-Gould and Dave Wright seeing shots going narrowly wide.

However 10 minutes before the break Borough then gifted Wadebridge a goal back when a misplaced pass in defence was intercepted by an opposing striker who finished clinically past Sam Borthwick who was making his Borough debut in goal.

Borough went into half time feeling slightly aggrieved not to be at least a couple of goals to the good.

Borough made several changes at half time to give the full squad a run out but it did not affect the flow of Borough's play.

The home side's second goal soon followed with Stuart Fort, who is having a great pre-season, sending in a cross which put Wadebridge under all sorts of pressure and this led to a defender turning the ball into his own net.

Borough then turned on the style and Jamie Walton-Gould scored the goal of the game with a great strike from fully 30 yards. He was playing using a pair of Luke Hurlock's old boots at the time as his had split. Apparently Luke is now considering wearing them himself for the next game!

Alex Haste, who had switched from right midfield to left, completed the scoring when he latched onto a through ball, side stepped a defender and cooly places the ball into the corner of the net.

A thoroughly deserved win against a team in the next division up bodes well for the season as the race for a place in the starting XI continues.

St Stephens Borough 1 Torpoint Athletic 5

Following a late switch to Saltmill in view of the bad weather both teams played their part in a good football match played in the right spirit.

Torpoint opened the scoring on the 20 minute mark when the ball was chipped into the box and headed down to the unmarked Lewis Kershaw who had the simplest chance of slotting the ball passed Dave Greene in the Borough goal.

This did not deter Borough who created several good situations with Jamie Walton-Gould being at the centre of most of them.

After half an hour Stuart Fort found himself in space on the left and fired over a deep cross for Alex Haste to head in at the far post to bring the home side level.

Play was evenly balanced for the remainder of the half and it took a Luke Avis Riordan rocket from fully 25 yards to send Torpoint in at the interval with a 2-1 advantage,

Borough made several changes at half-time to give all the new signings a run out and as the half went on Torpoint became more dominant and scored three further goals through Deane Cardew, Avis Riordan and Darren Hicks,

This was a good workout for both teams and plenty of positives can be taken out of the game for Borough as the new season approaches. Lewis Fedrick had another excellent game and all the new youngsters aquitted themselves well.

Boscastle 0 St Stephens Borough 6

Goals from Stuart Fort, Tom Clark plus new signings Jamie Walton-Gould (2), Lewis Fedrick and Aaron Pearce got the new look Borough side's pre-season off to a great start.

Borough weathered a strong opening from the home side but gradually took hold of the game with plenty of penetration from the wide areas where Fedrick particularly impressed

Walton-Gould up front looked a handful and amidst the new young signings vetran Andy Wright and an excellent game both up front first half and centre midfield second.

The new management team of Phil Bennett and John Busher were delighted with both the result and the performance.
