St Stephens Borough Veterans 2

Plymouth Argyle Veterans 4

As part of their 10 year anniversary St Stephens Borough played a veterans football match against Plymouth Argyle veterans in Kimberley Stadium, Saltash, on the Sunday of May Fair weekend - 4th May 2008 - kicking off at 2.30pm.

In front of a crowd in the region of 300 people if not more Borough went down 4-2 to the team of ex professionals but gave as good as they got for the majority of the match.

Argyle drew first blood when Mark Damerell put them ahead only for Shane Blanks to quickly draw Borough level.

There were chances for both teams with Borough goalkeeper Gary 'The Cat' Homer saving brilliantly from Tommy Tyan whilst Chris Pierce-Jones and Lee Stapleton both went close for Borough before the half ended one goal apiece.

Argyle started to dominate for a spell at the start of the second half but the next goal was a brilliant header from Borough's Alistair Sampson. Unfortunately he headed into his own net to give Argyle the lead.

Further goals followed from Gary Penhaligon and Micky Evans for Argyle before Steve Brown gave the Borough fans something to cheer as he rounded the keeper before slotting home their second to make the final score 4-2 to the visitors.

This was an excellent game of football and afternoons entertainment and was thoroughly enjoyed by the large crowd which included the Mayor of Saltash Bob Austin and his wife as well as Cornwall County FA President Brian Conyon MBE.

St Stephens Borough are extremely grateful to everyone connected with Plymouth Argyle veterans, to the match referee Shaun Edge and his assistants Colin Penhorwood and Keith Olver and to Saltash United AFC for allowing the use of Kimberley Stadium and for providing the post match hospitality.

It is hoped to arrange a similar match next year as part of the May Fair celebrations.

St.Stephens Borough 1 St.Dominick 3

Borough suffered their second league defeat of the season lossing 3-1 at home to St.Dominick. Borough struggled to raise a squad for their last home game of the season with no fewer than six players missing for the fixture through injury and work. St.Dominick who needed the points to try and secure runner up spot battled hard for every ball. Lee Jackett opened the scoring from close range on 15 minutes which was cancelled out by Andy Wright following a good run from Daniel Thompson. With just two minutes on the clock before the interval St.Dominick won a free kick near the corner flag and the cross was flicked on by Arron West for Adam Nickson to slot home from close range. The second half ssaw a even contest with both teams having periods of dominance. Borough pushed forward in search of the equalizer but were made to pay when James Carmichael broke free securing all 3 points with a goal twenty minutes from time. As expected this was a hard fought contest with St.Dominick edging it on this occasion. Borough will have their chance to get revenge for the defeat when they meet again in two weeks time.

St Stephens Borough 0 St Teath 1

Newly crowned Duchy Premier champions St.Stephens Borough traveled to Launceston to take on Division One St.Teath in the knock out cup semi final and went down by a single goal.

Borough had to make the trip without season regulars Alistair Sinclair, Ben Philp and Dave Wright but still had toy be considered favorites for this clash. The first half was some what none eventful with neither team having a clear shot on target as both teams fought to gain control of the ball and take control of the game.

St.Teath looked most dangerous from corners and set pieces and it was a corner in the 55th minute from which the only goal in the match came as St.Teath headed home.

St.Teath then had a player sent off and with the extra man Borough applied the pressure with Stuart Fort coming closest only to a be denied by a last ditch tackle. The game was then changed again as ten minutes later the referee gave a red card to Dave Wilkinson following what looked like an innocuous challenge to even the sides again. Borough threw everything at the St.Teath but their defense stood firm and Borough were left to rue their missed opportunities as crashed out of the cup.

St Stephens Borough 3 Launceston Utd 0

St.Stephens Borough took the Duchy Premier title at their first attempt beating Launceston 3-0.

Borough put behind them their first league defeat in over 14 months and went into the game against Launceston fully determined to take the title. Borough started well and had the chance to go ahead in the first thirty second when a shot from Stuart Fort went just wide of the goal. Borough played good attacking football and on 22 minutes Dave Wilkinson headed home from an Andy Wright corner.

Two minutes later Stuart Fort made it two when he beat a player and shot from the edge of the box into the back of the net. With the exception of two corners Launceston never really threatened the Borough's goal in the first half.

The second half saw Borough continue to control the game and with one eye on their cup semi-final against St.Teath on Tuesday evening the manager had the luxury of making three early subsitutions. Top scorer Dave Wilkinson could have scored a hatrick as he saw 3 headed changes narrowly miss. He finally got his second on 90 minutes as when he broke the off side trap and lobbed the ball over the keeper. Borough are now seeking to test themselves in senior football for the first time in the clubs short history.

Lamerton 1 v St.Stephens Borough 0

St.Stephens Borough suffered their first league defeat in 29 games after being beaten by a late goal away to Lamerton. The last team to take all three points of Borough was Launceston some 14 months ago. Borough knew it was going to be a tough order to go a whole season without being beaten and their tremendous run had to come to end sometime. Borough travelled to Lamerton knowing a win would secure the Duchy Premier league title but did not do themselves justice against a competetive Lamerton team. The first half saw even exchanges of play with no real changes for either team. In the second half the games opened up with both teams having changes but with Lamerton coming closest hitting the woodwork. It looked like it would finish with honours even until a goalmouth scramble in the 85th minute saw Kevin Swift fire home from 5 yards out.

Borough now have the opportunity to secure the title at home next Saturday taking on the last team to beat them before their winning streak, Launceston.

Torpoint 1 v St.Stephens Boroguh 3

Borough collected three valuable points in their chase for the league title away to Torpoint.

With Torpoint boasting the top three goal scorers in Duchy Premier and with Borough having the best defensive record it was always going to be a entertaining prospect. In blustery conditions both teams battled hard to take control over this important game in the first half. Torpoint with the wind at their backs and playing down the hill had most of the pocession in the first half. Both teams had chances to open the scoring but at half time it was still goalless.

There was a degree of luck involved in Borough's first goal as one minute into the second half Jamie Manuel looped a ball into the box which seemed to be covered by the keeper who collected the ball and stepped back over his goal line.

Five minutes later it was level again when Jason Bates crossed for Brian Stacey to bundle home at the near post.

Borough began to apply more pressure and in the 75th minute Stuart Fort received the ball on the edge of the box beat a player and shot past the outstretched keeper.

Torpoint's fate was sealed in the 91st minute when Ross Exley picked the ball up on the half way line ran towards goal and let fly from 25 yards out to see the ball ripple the back the back of the net. This was a close fought contest as always between these two teams with Borough taking the spoils this time to continue their unbeaten record.

St.Merryn 0 v St.Stephens Borough 2

Borough travelled to bottom of the table St.Merryn looking to get back to winning ways having dropped their first points of the season the previous week. A wet and windy afternoon did not make playing conditions favourable for either team. The first half saw a battling performance by St,Merryn and Borough struggle to get into their passing game. Chances were restricted to one long range effort by St.Merryn and only a couple of close efforts by Borough. The second half saw Borough step up a gear and Dave Wright nearly opened the scoring in the 50th mintues but was unable to steer his shot past the keeper following an Andy Wright cross from the left. On sixty minutes Borough broke through as Jamie Manuel ran from the half way line did a one two with Dave Wilkinson on the edge of the box and slotted past the outstretched keeper to record his first goal of the season. Ten minutes later Borough's Dave Wilkinson was brought down just inside the box but was shocked when a free kick just outside the box was awarded by the referee insteed of a penalty. Borough continued to apply the pressure but to St.Merryn's credit they contested for every ball and never gave up. The game was sealed 5 minutes before the final whistle when Andy Wright took a free kick from the left which took a slight deflection and ended up in the back of the net. Wright should have got his second a minute later when he headed wide from 3 yards out. Borough were worthy of their victory but credit needs to go to St.Merryn who battled for the whole game.

St Stephens Borough 0 Pensilva 0

Premier Division leaders St.Stephens Borough lost their perfect record in their eighteenth game by a resolute Pensilva side that battled with a superb game plan to hold out for a goalless draw.

Borough didn’t start particularly well and the visitors gained confidence, although they never threatened to break the deadlock themselves.

Good goalkeeping and their well-organised system gave Pensilva a well-deserved point in the end as Borough spent virtually the entire second half camped in Pensilva's half.

Pensilva’s Tony Rogers said that they knew their only chance against such a superb team was to keep things tight and that his team defended like Trojans.

Borough managers Steve Brown and Alistair Sampson were disappointed with the result and will now look to pick the team up for the important games to come starting at St Merryn this Saturday.

Saturday, 23rd February 2008

St Mawgan 2 St Stephens Borough 4

St Stephens Borough won their 17th league game of the season with this hard fought victory at a blustery St Mawgan.

Borough took the lead after ten minutes when Daniel Thompson, who is making a habit of scoring important goals, forced the ball home from close range.

Shane Blanks set up Ben Philp to fire home Boroughs second from fully 30 yards after fifteen minutes and Philp got his second and Borough's third after good work from Stuart Fort nine minutes later.

James Olsen fired home an impressive long range shot for the home side three minutes before the interval to bring them back into the game although Borough will be asking themselves why he wasnt closed down quicker.

Facing a difficult second half up the slope and against the wind Borough knew they were going to be up against it and so were delighted to extend their lead on sixty-three minutes. A good passing move originating from left back Jamie Manuel saw Andy Wright in a position to pick out Dave Wilkinson at the far post with a pinpoint cross and Borough's top scorer made no mistake, giving the 'keeper no chance with a powerful header.

It only took three minutes for St Mawgan to reply as Darren Allum's free kick from the Borough right took a deflection on its way passed Borough 'keeper Dave Greene.

Boroughs defence then stood firm allowing the home side no further opportunities to score and were happy to run out 4-2 victors.

Saturday, 16th February 2008

St Dennis 1 St Stephens Borough 5

St Stephens Borough recorded their 16th Duchy League Premier Division win of the season after coming from behind to defeat St Dennis 5-1 at Boscawen Park on Saturday.

The home side went in front in somewhat bizarre circumstances after 15 minutes. With the ball safely in the St Dennis half of the pitch the referee penalised Borough 'keeper Dave Greene for dissent and awarded the home side an indirect free kick in the Borough penalty area. The ball was passed to Nigel White who struck it into the top corner of the net .

Borough were level after 27 minutes when Stuart Fort broke through the home sides offside trap and showed remarkable composure to calmly take the ball around the home goalkeeper Mike Barrett and stroke the ball home.

Daniel Thompson then struck the St Dennis crossbar from 30 yards out before two goals in the last five minutes of the half saw Borough go in 3-1 ahead.

Firstly Thompson was the first to react after Barrett had paried an Andy Wright freekick and then Shane Blanks blasted the ball home after Stuart Fort had hit the crossbar.

Borough dominated the second period although the St Dennis front two, who both played well, did still cause problems.

On 70 minutes Thompson hit his second of the game for Borough's fourth and with ten minutes to go Dave Wilkinson hit the fifth to ensure a comfortable win for Borough in the end.

Barrett in the home goal made several outstanding saves or the score could have been greater.

St Stephens Borough 3

Tywardreath RBL 0

St.Stephens Borough are the first team through to the semi-finals of the Jeffery’s Estate Agents Knock Out Cup, but they were given a very difficult time before dispatching Division One side Tywardreath RBL three nil.

The visitors played well above themselves and went in goalless at half time, and in fact had the halves two best chances which were both well saved by Dave Greene.

Borough had the perfect start to the second half when Andy Wright crossed for Dave Wilkinson to head them ahead within two minutes. RBL continued to frustrate and cause problems for the home side, and it was only two late goals that sealed their fate.

A handball in the box led to an eighty-sixth minute penalty, which was converted by Dave Wright, and then two minutes from time Wilkinson struck again. A short pass found him in space on the edge of the box, and he turned and fired home into the net.

Saturday, 26th January 2008

St Stephens Borough 2 Roseland 0

St.Stephens Borough moved closer to the Duchy League Premier title with a two nil success over Roseland, which gave them a fifteenth straight win, and at the same time gained revenge over Roseland who knocked Borough out of the Cornwall Junior Cup, Borough's only defeat of the season.

They had a dream start after two minutes when a ball from defence by James Tripp found Dave Wilkinson and he opened the scoring.

Jamie Manuell threaded a fine through ball to Mark Loton in the fourteenth minute, but with the goal gaping Loton fired over the bar.

Borough doubled the lead a minute after the restart when Stewart Fort crossed to the far post where Loton headed back to Wilkinson to hit his second.

Borough dominated the second period but were unable to add to the scoring with the Roseland keeper making some fine saves and Shane Blanks being denied by the post.

After two weeks inactivity this was a great way to return to football action and, with Edgcumbe losing, another big three points.

Saturday 5th January 2008

St.Stephens Borough 1 v Edgcumbe 0

Game of the week saw St.Stephens Borough overturn second place Edgcumbe 1-0 at Warfleton. Edgcumbe desperately need the win to keep their title hopes alive and put in an excellent performance which was worthy of at least a point. The game started farily even but there were no real chances from either team until on 20 minutes Ben Philp got onto the end of a Dave Wilkinson cross ball for Borough. Philp's shot was pushed wide by the Edgcumbe keeper and was returned back into the penatly area by Daniel Thompson on the right. The ball was only cleared to the edge of the box and Andy Wright drove the ball with his left foot into the corner of the net. Ten minutes later another through ball by Wilkinson saw Thompson in a similar goal scoring change but he lifted the ball over the keeper and over the bar. The best first half change for Edgcumbe was a free kick 2 minutes from time, 25 yards out. Graham O'Neil curled the ball around the wall into the top corner but somehow Dave Greene got a hand to it and turned it wide. The second half saw Edgcumbe attack in search of the all important goal. However Borough with the best defensive record in the league stood firm. Edgumbe came close on two further occassions in the second half but were denied by the outstanding Greene and the post. Edgumbe deserved more out of the game but the win gives Borough a maximum 42 out of 42 points for their first season in Duchy Premier.

St.Stephens Borough 5 v St.Mawgan 1

Borough had to come from behind to record their 13 straight league win of the season to maintain their 100% start to season.

St.Mawgan took the lead five minutes into the game when they were awarded a penalty following a seamingly accidental coming together of two players.

Two minutes later the match was level again when Dave Wright lobbed the ball over the keeper. Two minutes later it could have been 2-1 to Borough when Ben Philp struck the ball from 20 yards out but some how the keeper tipped the ball over the cross bar.

Borough took the lead on 20 minutes when Stuart Fort was put through the shot past the outstreched keeper. Borough increased their lead on 27 minutes when Daniel Thompson, playing in an unfamiliar position, left back, found space to run with the ball and following a one to with Fort let fly 25 yards out with his left foot and saw the ball fly into the back of the net.

Stuart Fort put the game beyond doubt 5 minutes before the break when Ben Philp fed through a ball for Fort to run onto and shoot past the keeper.

The second half saw St.Mawgan continue to battle but Borough were just too good for them on this occasion and Fort didn't have to wait long to get his hat-trick. Ten minutes into the second half Steve Newton got his head to a cross which came of the foot of the post allowing Fort an easy tap in to get his 3rd. Borough were unable to register any more goals as St.Mawgan to their credit never gave up. The win leaves Borough in the best possible position for the start of 2008.

Saturday, 15th December 2007

St.Stephens Borough 3 v Dobwalls 0

Borough put in one of their best performances of the season to over come a much improved Dobwalls. The game was played at a tremendous pace with both teams determined not to give any ground to their opponents. It was Borough who had the first chance to open the scoring when on 42 minutes Dave Wright was up ended in the box. Andy stepped up only to see his shot come off the foot of the post. Howver two minutes later Dave Wilkinson was fouled in the box and Borough had another chance to go into the break one up. This time Dave Wright stepped up and converted the spot kick. The second half saw Borough start to dominate the game and apply more pressure on the Dobwalls goal. Twenty minutes in Andy Wright crossed for Stuart Fort to head home from close range to increase the score line. Borough defence marshalled by Alistair Sinclair continued to stand firm and Dobwalls were unable to get a clear shot on goal to trouble Dave Greene in Goal. Fort came close on three other occasions only to be denied by excellent saves. With 90 minutes up on the clock Nathan Holliday picked the ball up on the right and played in down the wing for James Tripp whos cross picked out Fort who turned and shot past the keeper to get his second of the game. Both teams gave everything in this hard fought game but Borough were worthy of their victory to keep top spot and make it twelve wins out of twelve.

St.Stephens Borough 2 v St.Stephen 0 (Cup 2nd round)

St.Stephens Borough made hard work of their contest with division two side St.Stephen to progress to the third round of the cup. St.Stephen bottom of the second division worked tirelessly for 90 minutes to ensure Duchy leaders Borough didn't have the tie all their own way. Borough started the better team as the visitors gave them space to pass the ball around and on 15 minutes Borough were ahead. A throw in from Nathan Holliday found Dave Wilkinson on the left who crossed for Steve Newton to slot home from close range to score his first goal for Borough. His second came twenty minutes later when Andy Wright crossed from the left this time who found Newton free on the far post to volley home. Newton thought he had his hat-trick five minutes later but his goal was ruled out for off side. The second half could have turned into a goal fest but the visitors worked hard to ensure Borough didn't have time on the ball and to their credit did not stop competing making the second half ensuring that Borough had to hold onto their lead. Borough now progress to the third round knowing they have to improve their performance if they wish to maintain a cup run this season.

Saturday, 17th November 2007

Gunnislake 2 v St.Stephens Borough 4

St.Stephens Borough continued their excellent start to life in Duchy Premier with a 4-2 away win over 4th place Gunnislake to maintain their 100% record. Borough started the better team opened their account on 15 minutes when Shane Blanks spotted the run of Andy Wright and played a superb ball right into his path to volley home. Three minutes later Borough were two up when Dave Wright out paced the Gunnislake defence to slot past the advancing keeper. Gunnislake started to claw their way back into the game and Jarry Kelly scored on the half hour mark. The second half again saw Borough start the stronger team and they didn't have to wait long to restore their two goal advantage when Andy Wright got his second of the match scoring direct from a free kick twenty five yards out on 47 minutes. Gunnislake never gave up and continued to chase the game and were rewarded on 75 minutes when they reduced the deficit to one goal again when Kelly got his second of the game. Dave Wilkinson put the game beyond doubt with ten minutes remaining he slotted home from six yards. The win means Borough have achieved 11 wins out of 11 their best ever start to a season in the clubs history.

Roseland 2 v St.Stephens Borough 1

St.Stephens Borough went crashing out of the Cornwall Junior Cup and lost their 100% record of nineteen straight wins in a row. Borough met Roseland for the third time this season in the second round of the Cornwall Junior Cup. Both teams started well with neither team having any real goal scoring opportunities in the opening exchanges. It was Roseland who struck first when a long range shot on 25 minutes found the back of the net. Borough only had to wait two minutes to draw level when Shane Blanks played the ball into Stuart Fort who had his back to the goal and turned and shot past the keeper. Borough continued to press and when Fort was brought down in the area it looked like they would get the chance to increase their lead but the referee waved play on to the amazement of the players. Roseland then had the cross bar to thank as a James Tripp cross came off a Roseland defender and lopped over the keepers head to bounce off the bar. It seemed like the luck was not with Borough particularly as with one minute before half time Borough failed to clear their lines in a goal mouth scramble and Roseland took the lead. The second half saw Borough go all out in attack and it was Andy Wright who had the earliest opportunity but his shot was excellently saved by the Roseland keeper. Roseland ensured they had ten players behind the ball and made life very difficult for Borough as chance after chance went begging. The Roseland defence stood firm and their hard work and determination ensure they were worthy winners on the day.

St.Stephens Borough 6 v St.Dennis 1

St.Stephens Borough put in one of their best performances against St.Dennis but had to do it the hard way and come from behind. Conditions were tricky for both teams as the slippery surface saw many passes go astray in the opening minutes. It was St.Dennis who struck first when on 10 minutes Andy Wright miss directed pass was latched onto by Chris Brown who scored from just inside the area. Borough started to find their passing game and it was always going to be at matter of when not if they were going to score. Borough drew level on 30 minutes when Andy Wright cross found Mark Loton free who volleyed home from 8 yards out. Just seven minutes later a near identical cross from Wright this time found Dave Wilkinson free who gave Borough the advantage before the break. The second half saw Borough start as they finished the first and the lead was widened when Andy Wright ran through on goal and slotted home from close range. Borough were in the luxury position of having two prolific strikers on the bench and with 20 minutes to go they had their opportunity to enter the fray. First to capitalise was Dave Wright who was played through on goal with an excellent ball from Daniel Thompson who converted to make it 4-1. With ten minutes left on the clock Dave Wright turned provider and found Stuart Fort on the edge of the box who still with a lot of work to do got half a yard and shot past the outstretched keeper. Five minutes later Fort found himself in the same position and did exactly the same to make it 6-1. St.Dennis never gave up but Borough were just too good on the day and remain top of the Duchy League with ten straight wins.

Duchy League Knock-Out Cup

St Stephens Borough 2 v Roseland 1

St Stephens Borough overcame gritty opponents Roseland to earn a home fixture against second division side St Stephen in the second round of the Duchy League Knock-Out Cup.

Veteran midfielder Andy Wright headed home Borough's opener on 39 minutes after Stuart Fort had headed on Ben Philps cross into the box.

It only took two minutes of the second half for Roseland to draw level as Nathan Harris, a veritable goliath, headed home at the far post following a free kick into the box.

Borough were being frustrated by the linesman's flag and it appeared that the tie would go into extra time. Fortunately for Borough with injury time being played Dave Wilkinson lost his man and turned in the box to fire home Borough's winner.

Praise must go to the visitors who turned up with the bare 11 players and must have left Warfelton feeling they had done enough to at least force an additional half hour.

For Borough, this was the second week in a row they scored a late winner which is testament to the side's fitness and desire to win

St Stephens Borough 3 v Lamerton 2

St.Stephens Borough managed to hold onto their 100 percent record by their fingers tips in a close fought contest with Lamerton. It has been two years since the two clubs have meet having a long history of closely fought battles over the previous years. The two sides have changed somewhat since those early days in lower Duchy leagues but the competitive spirit has not been lost. It was Lamerton who started the better team and on 30 minutes were award a free kick just outside the Boroughs box. Kevin Swift took the kick which came off the post and hit defender Jamie Manuel running back to clear the ball. Two minutes before half time Borough had the chance to level the match when Stuart Fort was upended in the box. Andy Wright stepped up but his shot was saved. The second half saw Lamerton on the attack right from the whistle and they didn't have to wait long for their second. Kevin Swift was given too much time outside the box and was able to turn and rocket the ball past Dave Greene from 30 yards out. Borough had to do something quick if they were going to get back into game and made a tactical switch taking off a defender and sending on Ben Philp to mark Swift out of the game. It didn't take long for the tactics to work. Daniel Thompson did a great dummy on the half way line and was feed down the wing by Stuart Fort. Thompson crossed the ball to the far post where Dave Wilkinson was able to head home from close range on 58 minutes. Borough continued to apply the pressure and it was only a matter of time until they got their second. Fifteen minutes from time Mark Loton found space on the right to cross a more or less identical ball to Wilkinson who again headed home to equalise. Borough did not take their foot of the gas and continued to throw bodies forward. On 85 minutes the continued pressure paid off. A good move down the right again and and an excellent cross from Andy Wright this time found Mark Loton in the middle of the box who managed to put the ball past the oncoming keeper with an out stretched foot. It was Loton's first goal for Borough and it proved to be the match winner. Lamerton deserved at least a point out the game as they were the better team over the 90 minutes but Borough showed the determination and team spirit to justify their top spot in the Duchy Premier and to extend their winning streak to ten games this season.
