Online Dating Safety Information and Advice

Date safely!

So you've been chatting online for a while now and you want to meet up with this person? First dates are always nervy, exciting experiences, but it's always sensible to be prepared and to not put yourself in danger. To help you, we've put together a list of tips on how to date safely:

  • Choose a neutral place. Coffee shops, bars and restaurants are all excellent places to meet up. They are lively and interesting, but most importantly, public venues where you can feel safe. Places not to go to are: his/her flat or house, dimly-lit car parks, areas of secluded countryside or public toilets.
  • Ask for a photo. A recent photo is handy so you know what he or she looks like. We say recent because a picture taken in July 1986 might not accurately represent that person now!
  • Let someone know where you are. Make sure you tell a friend or family member where you are and what you are doing. If you really want to be on the safe side, take a friend with you.
  • Plan how you are going to get home. Have your Taxi booked or bus home arranged in advance. Don't accept lifts.

Enjoy your date and remember to keep safe!
