In Vietnam, family meal is very important. It is one part of a happy family especially when people become more busy with their business. In some big cities such as Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh, parents are always busy, they have to get up early in the morning to take their children to schools before going to work. In the past, a wife often prepares breakfast for the whole family but this tradition or habit has been ignored somehow due to limited time.

Children study and lunch at schools, parents work and lunch at offices or restaurants or somewhere else which is convenient to them. Dinner is an opportunity for them to share a meal and talk together after a hard day. Some dads or moms do not meet their children for days because when they come back home from offices, their children have gone to bed and when they get up in the morning, their children have gone to school. This situation has become more popular and often happen at some families with busy parents who often come home very late or are always on a business trip. Restaurants have still been strange to many people and families in Vietnam. The reason is simple, eating at restaurants is more expensive than at home. However, there are some changes, young families (young wife and husband) prefer eating at restaurants for both of them do not want to involve cooking.

In general, value of family's meals have been still highly appreciated. For many people, family meal is one way to keep their family happy. The meal is not simply understood as lunch or dinner, it can be understood as feeling and sympathy, sharing and care. In many Vietnam families, the wives know which are their husbands' or children' favorite dishes, they try to make those dishes as frequently they can or at least on special occasions. At a moth test, a young pupil writes on a topic: What is success? She writes: "Success is simple, more simple than you often think, success comes when dad and son try to cook a favorite dish for mother on Mother's day or International women's day even if it is not as delicious as others do. How significant a dinner is when members of family have not met each other for a long time.
Vietnam is one the move, changes happen daily, life becomes faster so family meals are nothing if everyone ignores its traditional values. Some men do not want to come back home after work, the dinners and atmosphere of the dinner prevent them doing so. Preparing a daily meal may be simple but its result is great. Unfortunately, many young women forget this faction and try to find happiness somewhere else. They think that success in business brings them everything but if they have a happy family, they will be more successful.

Some foreigners want to explore Vietnamese culture, they often come to families, go to local markets and buy things for a meal. Is this the way to learn how to cook? The answer is "Yes" but the result is more than that.

Like Vietnamese students, Foreign students studying in Vietnam are also eager and look forward to Vietnam traditional Tet's holidays. On this occasion, they follow Vietnamese friends to enjoy the tet, visit friends, Vietnam families and go to pagoda.

Many foreign students from different countries taking different courses at different universities in Hanoi have been positively contributing to the diversity of colorful tradition Tet in Vietnam.
Sien Leva, a Canadian student who is taking a Vietnamese course at a Hanoi university of Social Science and Humans said:" Last Tet's holiday, I followed some Chinese students to pagoda and did not come back the dormitory until the next morning. Too tired and wet but everyone felt very happy for we joined with Vietnamese people to welcome new year Tets, this is very strange and special even I do not have the same feeling like Vietnamese people".

Some students from Russia and Poland shared: " The spring in Hanoi is very beautiful and very very friendly. It is very cold but I see the happiness on face of everyone. I did not have this feeling until I have two years living in this city, I have many Vietnamese friends and ever visited many families but the occasion is very special, I have no same feeling before".
Living in Vietnam for some years and taking a master course at Hanoi National university, Alan Smith, a French student said: "This is the third year I have lived in Hanoi and I can not forget my first Tet here. In fact, I fell in love with a Vietnamese girl but do not know how to say and express my feeling. I still keep 5 hundred dong note as her gift for Tet holiday. My mother said that I should keep this note for it will bring luck to me".

Tet occasion in Hanoi is often very cold but it can not prevent foreign students from pouring into streets and crowds to enjoy Tet's holiday with friends and Vietnamese people. Tet brings not only happiness to people but also contributes to bridging culture between nations.

Vietnam family

Economic development, culture integration, modernization and industrialization have affected size and lifestyle of Vietnam family.

Economic development, culture integration, modernization and industrialization have affected size and lifestyle of Vietnam family.

The form of "four generation family" with over 10 people living together is replaced with two generation family. 4-5 generation families are rarely found even the life expectation is higher than before.

Size of Vietnam family in certain regions are different, it is affected by education factors, social and economy features, customs as well as culture. In Red River delta, there are 4.1 people living in a family on average, the lowest ratio nationwide while it is 5 people in Northwest.

According to socialists' analysis, small family size is making good contribution to sex equality, minimizing troubles and quarrels which often happen in multi-generation families. In the past, women had many babies. With limitation to 2 babies, women now have more time to participate social activities, making considerable contribution to the development of the nation. They are more fairly treated and have opportunities to improve their education as well as profession. However, small family size has some side effects: Care for old people is limited, children and old people are more lonely. A survey in Hanoi shows that 30% family living in the centre revealed they did not have or had little time to care and educate their children.

Small family size, children live separately from their parents when getting married, makes old people more lonely and difficult in life, especially when social insurance for old people is very limited in rural areas in Vietnam.

In addition, open development of the economy makes Vietnam families at risk of social evils such as: addiction, prostitution etc...These side affects challenge life organization for old people, family services and baby care. Predicting these challenges, authorities have made some tough measures to enhance sense of family and its role in the modern time.

In the past few years, besides Tombs, temples, pagodas etc... village travel has attracted many foreign visitors. What is the reason for this attraction?

Going with a group to visit Thanh Toan village, we got acquainted with a young American girl asking about her reason for this visit, she said: " the air is fresh, the village is peaceful and remains its soul of Vietnam. With this short tour, I think I understand more about local people, their working day, their relationship etc... It is very interesting to explore a different culture in a typical village like this by yourself". A French visitor shared her thinking: " I can not expect for more! Modernization sometimes makes us bored, what we want to do is to explore and experience ourselves. This is a full feature of small Vietnam, I think I have become a Vietnamese even in a short day".

Hue is very rich in culture which has deep influence on the life-style of surrounding villages. I think that tourism should not be rigid. Mixture of destinations including village visiting is a good way to introduce and to help foreign visitors have a better view over Vietnam people, culture and history. Each countryside has its own features including villages. Like foreign friends, many Vietnamese people living in cities often come back their villages where they were born and brought up in the weekend as a short vacation to find peace, breathe in fresh air...

Vietnam is on the move but traditional value of many villages has not changed!
