FEN RADIO : Sundays With Shaun A cracking show today on Fen Radio 107.5, if you missed it then what were you doing? But the good thing is you can catch up with what went on right here, right now!
Here's what's been going on ... The Midday Mass-Debate, it happens between 12 and 1, we do it every week and we love it! If you've no idea what were talking about well, it's nothing rude, all we do is debate in mass at midday ... simple eh? Today's hot topic was the Smoking ban, it's been a whole year since it impacted on the UK so we jsut had to talk about it, and boy there was plenty of people across the Fens ready to give me their 2 cents. Apparently the ban has been hailed as the 'single most important health measure for a generation' after record numbers gave up the ahbit last year. the figures suggest that 234,060 people quit cigerettes in the months before and after the law was introduced a year ago, a figure up 22% on the previous year ... We were asking you - HAS THE BAN BEEN EFFECTIVE? First in on the phones was Pauline, she said she's all for the ban because it means that when her husband goes down to the local pub for a few drinks he doesn't come home smelling aweful because of all the other people smoking. Pauline also said there are some downsides to the ban, she thinks that it has a bad image for the town when you walk past somewhere and there are crowds of smokers huddled in the corner ... she even said that it looks even worse when the people are in uniform because that gives a bad impression on that company or profession.# Next in was Shiela from Walton Highway, and she is a non-smoker so she really enjoys the smoking ban because she said it's nice to come home from having a few drinks and not smell of smoke and nicotine. Although it does have its down sides ie. when you're out with people that do smoke they have to leave the room and the conversation, it kinda ruins the atmosphere. Kate said the UK should be more like places in Europe, less strict with the ban and have more places for people to smoke in bars and clubs, like a small room where you can go and not get wet or freezing cold. Peter phoned in becasue he has seen a documentary on TV about this subject so he phoned in to tell me that apparently pubs are losing money because people are buying drink from the local supermarkets/off-licenses and drinking and smoking at home. Apart from that Peter thought that the ban was a good idea, in keeping pubs and clubs cleaner and more approachable. Ron took a different stance on the ban by going down the taxation route, he said now people are smoking less where's that loss of money going to come from? If it's not coming from the sale of ciggerettes then it's going to go onto things like fuel/food/alcohol, which then effects us all doesn't it, regardless whether you smoke or not. Coming towards the end we had an anonymous text in saying "Why should Barstaff/DJ's/ bouncers etc be subjected to a smoky environment when all they're there is to serve drinks/play music etc" Also he or she went on to say "Why should us non-smokers be forced to pay the NHS for people that smoke, when there are so many warnings on packets/tv etc?" Good point, but this really got up Bobs nose because he said what about us that do smoke and don't drink? Surely it's the same for us, we pay so much money on the taxation of our vice and we have to pay extra for all the drunks thay cause trouble and end up in hospital for shrivled up livers! It proves that there's always 2 sides to every story, and that is what the Midday Mass-Debate is all about, getting people talking and involved witht the show, cheers guys.
