FEN RADIO : Sundays With Shaun I'm back after having a week off, which was nice! This week's show includes an awesome Debate, Cover songs and my top 10 bands that played at the Download Festival ....
So as per usual on a Sunday we like to have a bit of a debate, and today's debate was all about ABORTION. I found an article in the Daily Mirror on friday which showed to horrific facts about how many young girls are deciding to have an abortion. Experts have called for compulsory sex education in all schools after these figures were released. The number of terminations among girls under 16 rose by 10% to 4,376. The amount of under 14's had also risen significantly, they rose by a whopping 21% from 135 to 163. The overall figure for women have abortions went up by 2.5% to 198,500. So todays burning questions to the listeners was; WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO STOP YOUNG GIRLS HAVING ABORTIONS? IS EDUCATION THE ANSWE? Straight in on the phones was Ann, and this is what she said "I'm dead set against abortions, unless they are for medical reasons. We need the government to lower to the date you can have an abortion down to about 18 because with todays technology babies can survive at 23 weeks." Ann then went onto have a final statement which simply said " If you don't want one, don't do it!" Nice one Ann, next in was Kate on the phones, she said "The ones getting pregnant are irresponsibly teens getting knocked up to get privilages and benefits so they don't have to work." Interesting stuff, plenty of varied views coming in, here's a few texts and emails we recieved; Kevin - Teaching sex normalises it - surely we should be shielding kids from sexual promiscuity not promoting it. David - And just what 'facts' are they planning to teach 5 year olds? I sudder to think. Craig - In the 1930's there was very little sex education and very few teen pregnancies. Now, the kids can't go through the school gates without being asked to put a comdon on a bannana and now we see record levels of teen abortions. A few more calls came in toward to end, we had an anonymous one which stated "I agree with most people, but I think that abortions are too readily available. Kids need to be brought up with respect because kids nowadays seem to have lost that, and finally Kids need to be kids, not young adults at age 6, exposed to make up and adult situations, let them grow up properly." Wendy was next in, she said that what were lacking in this day and age is family values, the problem with abortion and pregnancies is that it's deemed 'normal' now, so everyone's doing it. She then finished with "We need more responsible parents are more dicipline!". Finally Mary phoned in just in the nick of time and said "I'm all for sex education in secondary schools but the problem comes when her 10 year old comes home and knows everything about 'the birds and the bee's', sex education should only be relevent to teens around the age of consent, possibly 14, 15 and 16 year olds need to know, not any younger. We had a great response today, thanks for everyone for joining in, lets hope we can do the same next week, if you fancy listening then tune your radio to 107.5 and we'll debating on there from Midday. Just before I told everyone about my time at Download something took my eye. A report in the paper came up with the all time favourite cover version, it also had the worst cover of all time, I had to look this up. The best cover was Jimi Hendrix's version of Bob Dylans classic 'All Along the Watchtower' which we just had to play, and it went down a treat, I tell you what didn't go down well ... CELINE DION + ANASTACIA doing a cover version of AC/DC's 'You Shook Me All Night Long' That was voted the worst ever cover, EVER! I played it out, well not all of it, and I was getting people telling me to shut it off, not only that I managed to find another aweful cover it was ... TAKE THAT doing Nirvana's 'Smells like Teen Spirit' OH MY GOD, it was the worst thing I've ever heard, Kurt Cobain must have been doing 360 degree flips in his grave, it was terrible! And on that note, lets talk about some GOOD music, the Download Festival! It was absolutly amazing, 3 days of the top rock and metal bands from all over the world, so I HAD to do something about this, so I thought i'd substitute the Half Hour of Power this week and do a Download Top 10 bands, here's the results; 10 - JUDAS PRIESTS and in at number 1 was a little band called 'BIFFY CLYRO' who played on the saturday, and rocked Donnington Park like anybody's business, BUT not only that, they totally stripped their set down to just an acoustic guitar and wowed the crowd unlike any other band, simply amazing and thats the reason they're number 1 on my Top 10 at Download. Well ... We have reached the end my friends, Thanks for reading, hope you guys can tune in next week and maybe I'll hear from you too. Bye Bye Shaun CommentsWant to comment on this blog entry?
