Source: Shaunandez A cracking show today on Fen Radio 107.5, if you missed it then what were you doing? But the good thing is you can catch up with what went on right here, right now!
Here's what's been going on ... The Midday Mass-Debate, it happens between 12 and 1, we do it every week and we love it! If you've no idea what were talking about well, it's nothing rude, all we do is debate in mass at midday ... simple eh? Today's hot topic was the Smoking ban, it's been a whole year since it impacted on the UK so we jsut had to talk about it, and boy there was plenty of people across the Fens ready to give me their 2 cents. Apparently the ban has been hailed as the 'single most important health measure for a generation' after record numbers gave up the ahbit last year. the figures suggest that 234,060 people quit cigerettes in the months before and after the law was introduced a year ago, a figure up 22% on the previous year ... We were asking you - HAS THE BAN BEEN EFFECTIVE? First in on the phones was Pauline, she said she's all for the ban because it means that when her husband goes down to the local pub for a few drinks he doesn't come home smelling aweful because of all the other people smoking. Pauline also said there are some downsides to the ban, she thinks that it has a bad image for the town when you walk past somewhere and there are crowds of smokers huddled in the corner ... she even said that it looks even worse when the people are in uniform because that gives a bad impression on that company or profession.# Next in was Shiela from Walton Highway, and she is a non-smoker so she really enjoys the smoking ban because she said it's nice to come home from having a few drinks and not smell of smoke and nicotine. Although it does have its down sides ie. when you're out with people that do smoke they have to leave the room and the conversation, it kinda ruins the atmosphere. Kate said the UK should be more like places in Europe, less strict with the ban and have more places for people to smoke in bars and clubs, like a small room where you can go and not get wet or freezing cold. Peter phoned in becasue he has seen a documentary on TV about this subject so he phoned in to tell me that apparently pubs are losing money because people are buying drink from the local supermarkets/off-licenses and drinking and smoking at home. Apart from that Peter thought that the ban was a good idea, in keeping pubs and clubs cleaner and more approachable. Ron took a different stance on the ban by going down the taxation route, he said now people are smoking less where's that loss of money going to come from? If it's not coming from the sale of ciggerettes then it's going to go onto things like fuel/food/alcohol, which then effects us all doesn't it, regardless whether you smoke or not. Coming towards the end we had an anonymous text in saying "Why should Barstaff/DJ's/ bouncers etc be subjected to a smoky environment when all they're there is to serve drinks/play music etc" Also he or she went on to say "Why should us non-smokers be forced to pay the NHS for people that smoke, when there are so many warnings on packets/tv etc?" Good point, but this really got up Bobs nose because he said what about us that do smoke and don't drink? Surely it's the same for us, we pay so much money on the taxation of our vice and we have to pay extra for all the drunks thay cause trouble and end up in hospital for shrivled up livers! It proves that there's always 2 sides to every story, and that is what the Midday Mass-Debate is all about, getting people talking and involved witht the show, cheers guys. The next big feature in the show was the welcome return of the Half Hour of Power, we play you Hlaf an Hour's worth of BRAND NEW MUSIC, how good is that? Source: Shaunandez I'm back after having a week off, which was nice! This week's show includes an awesome Debate, Cover songs and my top 10 bands that played at the Download Festival ....
So as per usual on a Sunday we like to have a bit of a debate, and today's debate was all about ABORTION. I found an article in the Daily Mirror on friday which showed to horrific facts about how many young girls are deciding to have an abortion. Experts have called for compulsory sex education in all schools after these figures were released. The number of terminations among girls under 16 rose by 10% to 4,376. The amount of under 14's had also risen significantly, they rose by a whopping 21% from 135 to 163. The overall figure for women have abortions went up by 2.5% to 198,500. So todays burning questions to the listeners was; WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO STOP YOUNG GIRLS HAVING ABORTIONS? IS EDUCATION THE ANSWE? Straight in on the phones was Ann, and this is what she said "I'm dead set against abortions, unless they are for medical reasons. We need the government to lower to the date you can have an abortion down to about 18 because with todays technology babies can survive at 23 weeks." Ann then went onto have a final statement which simply said " If you don't want one, don't do it!" Nice one Ann, next in was Kate on the phones, she said "The ones getting pregnant are irresponsibly teens getting knocked up to get privilages and benefits so they don't have to work." Interesting stuff, plenty of varied views coming in, here's a few texts and emails we recieved; Kevin - Teaching sex normalises it - surely we should be shielding kids from sexual promiscuity not promoting it. David - And just what 'facts' are they planning to teach 5 year olds? I sudder to think. Craig - In the 1930's there was very little sex education and very few teen pregnancies. Now, the kids can't go through the school gates without being asked to put a comdon on a bannana and now we see record levels of teen abortions. A few more calls came in toward to end, we had an anonymous one which stated "I agree with most people, but I think that abortions are too readily available. Kids need to be brought up with respect because kids nowadays seem to have lost that, and finally Kids need to be kids, not young adults at age 6, exposed to make up and adult situations, let them grow up properly." Wendy was next in, she said that what were lacking in this day and age is family values, the problem with abortion and pregnancies is that it's deemed 'normal' now, so everyone's doing it. She then finished with "We need more responsible parents are more dicipline!". Finally Mary phoned in just in the nick of time and said "I'm all for sex education in secondary schools but the problem comes when her 10 year old comes home and knows everything about 'the birds and the bee's', sex education should only be relevent to teens around the age of consent, possibly 14, 15 and 16 year olds need to know, not any younger. We had a great response today, thanks for everyone for joining in, lets hope we can do the same next week, if you fancy listening then tune your radio to 107.5 and we'll debating on there from Midday. Just before I told everyone about my time at Download something took my eye. A report in the paper came up with the all time favourite cover version, it also had the worst cover of all time, I had to look this up. The best cover was Jimi Hendrix's version of Bob Dylans classic 'All Along the Watchtower' which we just had to play, and it went down a treat, I tell you what didn't go down well ... CELINE DION + ANASTACIA doing a cover version of AC/DC's 'You Shook Me All Night Long' That was voted the worst ever cover, EVER! I played it out, well not all of it, and I was getting people telling me to shut it off, not only that I managed to find another aweful cover it was ... TAKE THAT doing Nirvana's 'Smells like Teen Spirit' OH MY GOD, it was the worst thing I've ever heard, Kurt Cobain must have been doing 360 degree flips in his grave, it was terrible! And on that note, lets talk about some GOOD music, the Download Festival! It was absolutly amazing, 3 days of the top rock and metal bands from all over the world, so I HAD to do something about this, so I thought i'd substitute the Half Hour of Power this week and do a Download Top 10 bands, here's the results; 10 - JUDAS PRIESTS and in at number 1 was a little band called 'BIFFY CLYRO' who played on the saturday, and rocked Donnington Park like anybody's business, BUT not only that, they totally stripped their set down to just an acoustic guitar and wowed the crowd unlike any other band, simply amazing and thats the reason they're number 1 on my Top 10 at Download. Well ... We have reached the end my friends, Thanks for reading, hope you guys can tune in next week and maybe I'll hear from you too. Bye Bye Shaun Sunday 8th June, 2008
Source: Shaunandez The Blog about all the stuff that goes on during 11am - 4pm on Fen Radio 107.5 ...
Apart from playing awesome music all the day long, there's a few features that require a little more attention. These are "The Midday Mass-Debate" and "The Half-Hour of Power" So at Midday we have a debate for the whole hour, so that's why it's called "The Midday Mass-Debate".Today we were focussing on something a little more local, today we were talking about the tragic accident that happened on Wednesday 31st October 2007 where 2 people were killed in an accident while trick or treating with a friend on the Leverington Common Corner. An 18 year old man from Wisbech was arrested after the accident on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, he was the bailed and released on 'lack of evidence'. Stephanie Ward, 24, was pronounced dead on the scene, and Samantha, 4, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Kings Lynn, but after suffering a cardiac arrest, broken neck and brain injuries she died on the way there. So we wanted to know what people of the local area thought of this, and I was wondering who they would think was to blame. First response was from Anna on the text, she said "I think it's the drivers fault because he should have been more aware of his surroundings" Tina was next in and she simply said "In my opinion 2 lives have been lost, but there's been no justice" I then read out other details of what went on that night, Stephanie was with her friend on that night who was walking with a horse which had a small girl riding on it, Stephanie and Samantha (wearing glow sticks and high visability jackets) were walking in front of the horse. This provoked a reaction from Jo, she said " I feel deeply for the tragedy thats happened but I think the people with the horse were in the wrong, it's a shame that something like this had to happen but they should not have been riding their horse at night, as a horse rider myself I would neve ride after it got dark". Next in was Marilyn from Lakesend she had a similar view to Jo, apart from Marilyn thinks there should be soem form of law like the ones that cyclist have top abide by, where, if you have togo out with your horse at night then you MUST make sure you're well lit and very visable, then maybe there will be less accidents like this again. Last but not least we have Jim on the phones he said "As a lorry driver I almost had a similar accident to this one, I had a close call with a cyclist, and to this day I always wonder what if, so I sympathise with the driver of the car in this accident, although he's not going to prison, he does have a life sentence in the way that 2 lives will be on his mind for the rest of his life". Great debating which is what it's all about, the people having a voice on the show. Next up is my little favourite feature, "The Half-Hour of Power". I love new music so during the times of 1.50 and 2.20 I try my best to fit in as many songs as I can in Half an hour, No News, No Adverts, Just the tunes and myself telling you when they're out. If you missed any of it then here's all the details; THE COURTEENERS - NO YOU DIDN'T, NO YOU DON'T Last week's record of the week, comes from Manchester lads 'The Courteeners', they've reached top 5 success with their album 'St Jude' and this single comes straight from that. It's out on the 23rd June. GAVIN ROSSDALE - LOVE REMAINS THE SAME This weeks Record of the Week here on Fen Radio. The former 'Bush' lead singer has just released his first solo single called 'Love Remains the Same', that soon to be followed by a brand new album called 'Wonderlust', scheduled for release on the 16th June. BLOOD RED SHOES - THIS IS NOT FOR YOU In the vein of The Ting Tings, this 2 piece are set for superstardom. Earlier in April they released a brand new album called 'Box of Secrets' and the single 'This is not for you' comes from that, it's set for release June 16th. PANIC AT THE DISCO - THAT GREEN GENTLEMAN (THINGS HAVE CHANGED) Panic are back without the '!', but they're still on top form, this single is the follow up to 'Nine in the Afternoon'. It's the 2nd single from the bands 2nd album 'Pretty . Odd'. The album's out right now and what a cracker. The single will be out to buy tomorrow. THE SUBWAYS - ALRIGHT It's available to buy or download on the 16th June and then thier album follows on the 30th, thats called 'All or Nothing'. In the lineup to play the Download festival which I am going to, and The Subways are predicted to one of the highlights of the weekend, I can't wait. FOALS - RED SOX PUGIE
WEEZER - PORK AND BEANS They're back after a 2 year absence, this time with a self titled album, which the fans are calling 'The Red Album'. That's set for release June 16rd and the single will be out a week later. MCFLY - ONE FOR THE RADIO They're back with a BRAND new single, it comes off the back of the boys dropping their label and making a go of it themselves. Sick of all the criticism the boys have released this song as a dig to those that sang their songs but slated them behind their backs. A great new direction for McFly, and all I have to say is good luck to you boys. So they are the tunes we managed to cram in during a 30 minute period, nice or what? After saying that it sadly brings me to the end of this blog, and for all those that are avid readers, I won't be back next week as I'm off camping and watching loads of great music at the Download Festival, so hope you all keep well, and I'll see you soon! Catch you later Shaun Sunday June 1st, 2008
Source: Shaunandez Afternoon All, here's my blog, it's all about what goes on during my Sunday show on Fen Radio 107.5.
You alright everyone? Hope we're all fine for this Sunday afternoon. So whats been going on today during the show, well sit down, grab a cuppa tea and I'll tell you all about it. First feature of the day comes at Midday, It's called "The Midday Mass-Debate". A nice little thing we do every sunday, I choose a subject that has caught my eye in the news, out on the street or even in the papers, then I present my case and get all the wonderful people across the Fens to call/text/email in and tell me what they think about the subject. Today's subject was parenting and what would you do faced with the dilema that Carol Saldinack. She shopped her 2 sons to the police because they attacked Marc Parkinson on a night out causing him physical and mental damage. Marc was on a night out with a friend and they were attacked by Carols sons Luke and Oliver, they left Marc with extensive bruising and cuts, a perforated eardrum, bruised ribs and blind in one eye. Not only that he has suffered from depression and is scared to go outside in fear of another attack and in addition his business has failed plunging him and his family into debt. So ... we asked everyone, especially the parents, what would you do in this situation? And given the chance what would you say to Carol who shopped her own sons to the police? Ann was straight in on the phones and said "YES I would shop my kids, I have the faith that they would never do something like that, BUT IF they did, Iwould go straight to the police" She also said "Give Carol a medal for doing this". Next in was Kay on the text she said "Young people today don't have any respect for either the police or their parents. I would definatly do the same to one of my children. We need to go back to the values of the 50's. Ron called the show and said "I totally agree with everyone so far, BUT there are other people to blame too. Those Do-Gooders or PC Brigade, they've ruined it for parents because they've pretty much disarmed them from doing anything, you can't smack your kids or anything". He then went on to say that a little whallop never done him any bad, it made him understand whats right and whats wrong! In reponse Kate was next in and she said that she would shop her kids. BUT said that there are NO bad kids, just bad parents, Kate said that if children are bought up in the right way then they wouldn't ever do something like this. More and more views were coming in, but I couldn't possibly type them all down or else I'd have no fingers left, so I'll leave you with Wendy's text; "What a brave lady. I take my hat off to her and wish there were more people like her who are prepared to speak out" Next up on the agenda is my newest feature, it's called the 'HALF HOUR OF POWER', we play you 30 minutes of non stop new music, no ads, no news, just me, you and the tunes. Todays line up was; THE SUBWAYS - ALRIGHT Last weeks record of the week kicked us off on the rollercoaster that is the 'HHOP'. We played it last week because we love it so much. It's available to buy or download on the 16th June and then thier album follows on the 30th, thats called 'All or Nothing' THE COURTEENERS - NO YOU DIDN'T, NO YOU DON'T This weeks current record of the week, comes from Manchester lads 'The Courteeners', they've reached top 5 success with thei album 'St Jude' and this single comes straight from that. It's out on the 23rd June. The single will be out to buy on the 9th June. THE WOMBATS - KILL THE DIRECTOR Brand new music from 'The Wombats' this one is a re-release, it peaked at 35 in the charts back in 2007, and they're aiming for bigger things this time around. It will be available to buy on the 7th July. ELBOW - ONE DAY LIKE THIS The anthemic Elbow were next with thier stripped down sound of 'One Day Like This'. Almost orchestral in places. A firm favorite of mine and it comes out tomorrow, so I'm looking forward to getting my copy, hope you will too. THE RASCALS - FREAKBEAT PHANTOM Three lads from The Wirrell have been around for just under a year and they're plainng an Album release this month and a single launch. The album called 'Rascalize' will be out later in the month, but the single will be out tomorrow. WEEZER - PORK AND BEANS They're back after a 2 year absence, this time with a self titled album, which the fans are calling 'The Red Album'. That's set for release June 16rd and the single will be out a week later. So thats the 'HALF HOUR OF POWER', it'll be back next week, as will the Midday Mass-Debate and finally so will I. But for now I'm off, hope you like the Blog, hope you like the show even more. Tune in to Fen Radio tomorrow for the chance to win either £35 or £500, sound good, well .. we're here from 7am tomorrow morning.
