South Africa travel guide packed with tips and advice and useful information on activities and adventures. Find out what you need to see and do find out and what's hot right now.

The Free State is an area of South Africa that is made up of a flat plain that seems to go on forever. Home to a robust agricultural industry made possible by rich soil and its high elevation, this area of the country is home to lots of fun, too. Include it on your South Africa travel holiday and you’ll see why.

Hunt for fossils on your vacation. While most of the Free State is flat farmland, there are also caves that boast many ancient treasures. Rock art can be found in these old caves, too, but it is the dinosaur eggs and bones that are the real draw for tourists. Bring your children on a fun family “hunt” for the teeth of these extinct dinosaurs. Whether you find any or not, everyone in the family will have a lot of fun.

A safari on horseback is a wonderful way to see the Free State. You can take a short ride or spend several days on the trail. Ride into the mountains for a real treat. The views are spectacular. The plains will reveal its animal treasures to you when you come upon herds of Zebra, Black Wildebeest, or Springbok. You can find a horse that suits your temperament and level of riding experience. Even young children can find a pony that is suitable for a short ride.

Head for the Gariep Dam Nature Reserve to fish or enjoy water sports. Swim, canoe, or water ski to your heart’s content. Or you might want to play golf or tennis at one of the area’s resorts. You’ll also see the largest herd of Springbok that live in South Africa. Other wildlife lives in the area, too, including the Cape Mountain Zebra and Red Hartebeest.

Your South Africa travel holiday should include a visit to the Free State area of the country. You won’t be disappointed in all the fun you’ll find.
