Every girl wants to look and feel special for her prom. With a little bit of planning you can find the perfect outfit and save money for your special evening.

Prom dresses—like the beautiful young women who wear them—come in every shape, style, and color under the sun. However, that doesn’t mean that you need to fork over a small fortune to find the perfect prom dress for your big night.

The key is to start your prom night planning early so that you can find a style of dress that suits your body type as well as your personality

Here are my six tips to help you choose the right prom dress…

1. Save money by shopping smart
If you’re on a prom budget, save some dough by looking for dresses in consignment and thrift shops, borrow from a friend or older sister, or even rent your dress (you’re only going to wear it for one evening anyway). By taking your dress hunt out of the malls and chain stores, you’re more likely to find a unique dress or even a designer label in a cool vintage style that you can alter.

2. Start shopping early

As mentioned above, if you want to get a jump on the newest and hottest prom dresses—start your shopping 6 to 3 months in advance. This way you get a style you like before all of the other girls start tearing dresses from the racks in a panic. This will also give you adequate time to fine matching accessories—shoes, jewelry, hair decorations, and makeup—so you don’t have to splurge on a last minute rush.

3. Listen to your heart

You know your body better than your mom, your boyfriend, or your best friend, so go with your gut when you choose a prom dress style that you feel comfortable in and that reflects your personal style.

4. Choose based on versatility

If you choose a versatile dress in a neutral color (beige, black, white, or gray) you can up the ante with a few statement accessories—like bright colored shoes, chunky necklaces or bracelets, show-stopping earrings or hair decorations. And, just think, a short dress in a versatile style can be worn again and again at other events.

5. Embrace your age

Most girls who attend prom are teenagers or young women—not models on the catwalk in barely there dresses with their midriffs bared and their busts hanging out. So ditch the sexy appeal and choose a style that’s comfortable, fun and flirty but NOT trashy.

6. Make it an all evening event

Extend the evening’s festivities by starting early. Invite your girlfriends over to do hair and makeup together as you sip on sparkling apple cider and do each other’s faces, nails, and up dos. Then have a fun photo shoot before the limo sweeps by to pick you up.
