Exactly a year ago - 5th September 2007 this post about Know Yarr Numbers encouraged readers to look out for freeblood pressure checks during the Blood Pressure Association's Blood Pressure Testing Week - part of the Know Your Numbers awareness campaign.

This year the event is expected to be even bigger with more organisations suppporting it.

As well as giving people a blood pressure check for free an important part of the campaign is to encourage taking readings more frequently to spot early warning signs of high blood pressure. This doesn't necessarily mean having to visit your doctor as more and more people are choosing to monitor their blood pressure at home.

Q: Will I have to use a Stethoscope?

Although you may be more familiar with doctors and nurses using a manually inflated cuff and listening with a stethscope most home monitors are fully automatic and very easy to use. In fact there is some discussion as to the accuracy of readings taken with a stethoscope.

The British Hypertension Society now recommends over twenty automatic machine for home use and approves of their accuracy.
