Do not do donuts.

Yesterdays near catastrophe (I was spottted underneath a Chubby, Unfit 35 year old) prompted me to look at health and lifestyle issues.

A search on t'internet reveals many excellent sources of information and it does leave you wondering why with so much info available we continue to be a nation with high incidence of (avoidable) health problems.

Not only is the web crammed with clear messages to lose weight, less sugar, stop smoking etc but magazines dedicated to health and lifestyle are abundant and daily TV and Radio programmes encourage us to adopt lifestyles that will improve our health.

A couple of points stand out that I think are probably overlooked by many.

  • 50% of UK adults are overweight
  • over one in three have high blood pressure.
  • Cancer is the biggest UK killer closely followed by heart disease.

Lets hope that research finds solutions for Cancer and we should all wherever possible support this - incidently a mate of mine is running Race for Life too her page is http://www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/deemedlicott. Spare a few quid and make sure you click the Gift Aid box.

In the meantime it's up to us to prevent heart disease. High blood pressure increases the risk of stroke and heart disease but has no symptoms. The only way to find out if you blood pressure is high is to measure it. Blood pressure readings should be done routinely when you visit a Doctor but more and more people (especially those who have been identified as having high blood pressure) are benefiting from measuring their own at home.

Home blood pressure monitors are widely available and it is relatively inexpensive to but an accurate machine which is easy and simple to use.

It is however crucial that you use home monitors properly to get accurate readings.

A free information sheet "How to measure Blood Pressure" is available for your guideance.
