Munching with the best of 'em. Tirelessly searching for the perfect pasty.

Goodbye sunshine my old mate, I've been busy so this post is late.

"that's more like it" - cold wind and grey skies for the next few day*.

Surfed for a couple of blissful hours on Saturday 24th, Widemouth was pulling a small but well formed wave, ideal to brush off the winter cobwebs and crank up for the year ahead.

An enterprising fellow from www.threesixtyphotography.co.uk had his monster Zoom lens out and imagine my surprise, nay horror to see a small set of your twuely. I'm a goofy longboarder.

Downer - tight wads North Cornwall District Council now apply pay and display year round.

Upper - I built up a whopping appetite and the Widemouth Bay Cafe wa open. I finally got to try the renowned pasty they sell. Yes it was good but I guess the brisk trade meant that there oven barely had time to properly heat the little fellas.

I did some sleuthing and I reckon that they are supplied by Polmorla Pasties in Bude and further investigation reveals they have won industry awards for there "D Shape Pasty"

Feel the Pressure

Do not do donuts.

Yesterdays near catastrophe (I was spottted underneath a Chubby, Unfit 35 year old) prompted me to look at health and lifestyle issues.

A search on t'internet reveals many excellent sources of information and it does leave you wondering why with so much info available we continue to be a nation with high incidence of (avoidable) health problems.

Not only is the web crammed with clear messages to lose weight, less sugar, stop smoking etc but magazines dedicated to health and lifestyle are abundant and daily TV and Radio programmes encourage us to adopt lifestyles that will improve our health.

A couple of points stand out that I think are probably overlooked by many.

  • 50% of UK adults are overweight
  • over one in three have high blood pressure.
  • Cancer is the biggest UK killer closely followed by heart disease.

Lets hope that research finds solutions for Cancer and we should all wherever possible support this - incidently a mate of mine is running Race for Life too her page is http://www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/deemedlicott. Spare a few quid and make sure you click the Gift Aid box.

In the meantime it's up to us to prevent heart disease. High blood pressure increases the risk of stroke and heart disease but has no symptoms. The only way to find out if you blood pressure is high is to measure it. Blood pressure readings should be done routinely when you visit a Doctor but more and more people (especially those who have been identified as having high blood pressure) are benefiting from measuring their own at home.

Home blood pressure monitors are widely available and it is relatively inexpensive to but an accurate machine which is easy and simple to use.

It is however crucial that you use home monitors properly to get accurate readings.

A free information sheet "How to measure Blood Pressure" is available for your guideance.

Observant Vadina commented on the irony of being underneath CHUBBY UNFIT 35YR OLD SINGLE MUM !!!

I had to escape!

But I fear a bloggocks post coming.....

Think Mut, Think.

I know - what about that TV programme Whistleblower that exposed Barclays Bank encouraging their account consultants (pushy sales clerks) to disregard all guidelines about decency and privacy. Every opportunity to sell insurance, mortgages and credit cards must be exploited with attractive commisions paid for increased sales.

They're not alone.

Ever had the delight of an Everest Sales person in your home? I had to physically remove a Frankie Detori Looky/sound-a-likey after two hours of his last day of sale best ever , you got to GO FOR IT innit rubbish and being invited to join the midget jumping up and down on a window sample he had with him.

Only this lunchtime I was feeling a little peckish and popped into Shauls Bakery. Blimey before I'd even surveyed the fayre available a short hair-netted pasty muncher was on to me...."I haven't got all day my love" folded arms, rolling eyes the full pasty muncher treatment.

As for the pasty - very poor. Shame on you Shauls

Chancellor Brown has closed his red case and I reckon I'm alright Jack

Or Am I?

Gave up fags years ago so they can continue to extort tax from smokers although I'd like to see some sort of similar penalty for the larger sized amongst us who fail to restrain their eating habits.

Scotch frozen - hurrah so that's only about 85% of the price going to the Treasury.

Cider up a penny - that'll raise about a tenner a year then.

I was both elated and dismayed at the taxes imposed regarding vehicles. Not so much bothered by the petrol duty but the additional road tax on "none green" motors. Last night I resprayed the Bentley British Racing Green but I don't seem to have made a saving at all.

Urban Legend or Rude Insult?

Checking throught the infrequent comments left on these posts I came accross a note from "Big Boy" http://www.itsmymarket.com/forum/showthread.php?t=407 which merrily said theat my namesake was on the Urban Dictionary. Thanks to Big Boy for highlighting this. WARNING - this dictionary is not for the feint hearted.

Anyhow back to the business of the day:

Fifteen Cornwall boast of their extended opening hours and its breakfast delights.

Toast and Jam, £3.50

Tea, £2.50

Bowl of cereal, with yogurt, £4

Fry Up, £9.50 (not including Tea or Toast it seems)

So I reckon if I were to "stoke up" I'd be down about twenty quid.

Still what price a wonderful view and immediate acces to the crowded surf of Watergate bay?

I think I'll stick with Widemouth for the time being - word on the beach is that the Cafe does a stunning Pasty...

Oh go on I can't resist sharing this one <<link removed>> search for Jamie Oliver on the Urban Dictionary

I fell off my high horse.

Beware The Ides of March

Source: Kim Mutton
Thursday 15th March 2007, 2:14pm

I don't know what the "Ides" refer to - surely not the village on the outskirts of G'Exeter.

Weather Weather all together what's it gonna do? We don't know so let's just ask weather man Emu!

EBC1 with Rod Hull

I'm sure you'll all join me in giving a big round of applause for the super weather we've been enjoying recently. However as the saying goes "n'er cast a clout 'til May's out"

The sunshine and warmth has encouraged new shoots and buds on many plants and my first seedlings are popping up all over the place.

This is when the garden is at its most vulnerable. A sudden cold snap and it's Goodnight Mr Chips! I remember a late frost some years ago wreaking havoc with the garden. Early shooting perennials looked as though they'd been ginen a scorching with a flame gun, seedlings perished and fruit blossom vanished.

My advice is keep as much as you can under cover - the living room is very much like a garden centre at the moment, keep an eye on the greenhouse - long sunny days soon evapourate the moisture but close the door at night and if in doubt fleece anything you'd rather not perish.

Warrens Pasties - updated

Source: Kim Mutton
Saturday 10th March 2007, 6:29pm

What a wonderful day - sun shining birds singing and some seeds sprouting in the green house. Would I ruin it by going to Trago Mills?

I felt duty bound to check my previous critisism (Trago has nasty pasties) which contradicts yesterdays tasting of a Warrens Large Cornish Pasty from their Exeter Central shop. Are they the supplier of choice for Trago Mills' Pasty Shop?

Yes. It is clearly a case of location location location when it comes to full appreciation of a pssty. Same pasty but served ba a grumpy devon pasty muncher (XL) and surrounded by dregs.

Warrens seem to rock - they've shops all over - check this map of the south west and they're included in wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrens_Bakery

So as not to disappoint I do have a grievance - the blasted parking bays at Trago are too small for my new Bentley, Bah!!

What do you call....

Source: Kim Mutton
Friday 9th March 2007, 2:13pm

.....a pasty muncher with a rabbit up his backside?

Warren!

Which brings me seemlessly onto my latest tasting....brushes crumbs from lips.

Several folk have added comments to this humble space suggesting I try Warrens bakery for its offering of regional delights. I am grateful for all feedback especially if it points me towards a worthwhile pasty.

Warrens Large Cornish Pasty

It was served scalding hot - I had to juggle it from hand to hand in the paper bag and burnt my tongue during scoffing. The Large Cornish felt solid and had a good thick rim to hold. The filling had a fine creamy texture and was well seasoned. On close inspection the question had to be asked "where's the meat"?

Its odd that most packaged food has detailed breakdown of the ingredients and nutritional content but take away food seems to have no such requirement.

My pasty was bursting with small cubes of white spud and flecks of orange (swede I hope) along with occasional slivers of translucent pinkish brown gel. It tasted bloomin' great and I can only assume that the veg is cooked in strong stock because the flavour certainly wasn't as a result of the meat content.

Now I'm in a dilemma. In an earlier posting I berated Trago Mills for purveying nasty pasties yet I'm told that Warrens are the pasty provider of choice to Trago. I'll have to verify this yay another weekend visit. Maybe Warrens send there "sloppy seconds" there and the general ambience does little to help the enjoyment.

Warrens, Queen St, Exeter and Trago Mills, Newton Abbot (to be confirmed)

happy munching

Exeter - Crazy Paving

Source: Kim Mutton
Wednesday 7th March 2007, 9:51am

Will top notch paving be the key to Exeters success?

I stumbled upon this post on brightscape which enthusiastically looked forward to the completion of the Princesshay Development which is situated between the High Street and Southernhay. Tooled up with an cheap and cheerful Three Cooks pasty I took a peek to see how things are progressing

Somewhat disappointing to see a row of psuedo international eateries having their finishing touches added but an even bigger blow was the large billboard saying that Debenhams won't be opening until Autumn 2007.

The Princesshay development seems to have attracted a variety of architects designs that the City Planners didn't understand. Its a mish mosh of styles and materials that obscure the Cathedral and seem to deliberately create wind tunnels.

But look down and you can't fail to be impressed. The paving is exquisite - fabulous granite flags, cobbles and blocks expertly laid and incorporating effective drainage.

I watched as a smart section of paved thoroughfare was being drilled up and asked why this was so. The bloke shruged his shoulders and replied that this was actually the third time he'd done this. Either planning/project incompetence or an insistance of paving perfection.

Some parts of Princesshay are due to open at the end of this month - or was it April 1st?

Hayle

Source: Kim Mutton
Monday 5th March 2007, 2:32pm

Bloomin' wind and rain more like!

I'm sure your all mad keen to know how i got on with my quest to try a Phipps Pasty after reading such glowing reports about them.

You'd think that following the prompt response from the blogtastic Hazey Eyes that saved precious munching time by locating the fantastic "Pasty Eating" car sticker - I'd have been able to pop down to Hayle and get some top notch hot pasty action.

I'd been staying over in Altarnun on Saturday and thought that as I'm in Cornwall it should be straightforward. However when I looked over the map during breakfast on Sunday I realised just how far away Hayle is. "Looks like it'll need to be an overnight stay" I thought to myself as I buttered my fourth slice of toast.

As it turned out thank heavens I decided to "put off 'til tommorrow anything you can" - it didn't just rain, it was double rain. My journey home was a drenching challange. The old motor let plenty of spray throught the perforated undercarriage and new for 2007 there's a leak above the drivers sun visor happliy soaking the seat below.

Source: Kim Mutton
Friday 2nd March 2007, 12:01pm

I've been on t'interweb but can't find the "No hand signals, I'm eating a pasty" that Mr Two Socks spotted and mentioned.

Many thanks to those who helpfully commented on yesterdays post - looks like my weekend will be fully occupied as well as beginning the garden I'll be tracking down the Eating a Pasty Sticker and hopefully gragbing a Phipps Large Traditional if I can trek down to Hayle.

Is Hayle a good place? Any recommendations to make my trip worthwhile? Any decent surf spots?

Let you know how I get on.

Keep Munching.

Every day would be the first day of spring

March 1st, White Rabbits and looking forward to starting work in the garden. I'll just have to endure the crowds at Trago whilst I pick up a few choice plants and hopefully grab a bargain onsome household cleaning stuff so I'll be "tooled up" for a big Spring Clean.

Pasty Help Please.

Does anyone know where I can get a Phipps Pasty - I read glowing reviews about them on Jamie Olivers forum about Fifteen Cornwall
