Norfolk Single Dad
Our first visit of the year to the Norfolk Arena for the meeting known as "Wacky Races".... Which means that as well as TSR bangers there were three-wheeler Robin Reliants racing and a caravan race to finish. We were a little late arriving so had to park MILES from the track, but still made it inside just in time to see the start of the first race - chained pairs of bangers.
The first heat of 3-wheelers was fantastic as usual, they have enough trouble getting round the corners and staying upright, never mind trying to hit each other as well. Sam really loves the 3-wheelers, when they start rolling they just roll and roll and roll until they bump into something. If they end up back on their wheels they get a round of applause from the crowd - if they end up on their side the driver jumps out and pushes them back upright, and they get applause AND a big cheer. There was lots of clapping and cheering today.
We went to get Sam's traditional banger grub, then went for a nosey in the pits. And at that point the afternoon went weird.
I heard a tannoy message, something about a website called "Single Dads", and he's here today with his son. I thought it sounded interesting anyway, so we went round to the start/finish area to have a mooch at what was going on. Amazingly, it was me and Sam that the tannoy was meant for! A Channel 4 film-maker called Clare (see pic) had read this blog on Sunday, been inspired by our story, and wanted to film Sam and me at the banger racing meeting, along with one of the 3-wheeler drivers. I can't explain anything about the film that's being made, but it was most peculiar being filmed as we walked round the track, through the pits, etc. People were looking at us as if we "must" be someone famous, but far from it, we're just Sam and Daddy so STOP STARING! Clare wants to pop back to film Sam a little more at some point too, how cool is that.
The last race of the day was the caravan derby, and we stood and watched it with Sam's new mate Clare, who had by now stopped filming and was just enjoying the racing. As always the caravan racing was hilarious and awe-inspiring, the drivers are so...so....bonkers I think is the best word. One of them crashed very heavily into the fence directly in front of us, smash bang wallop, fantastico!
We eventually got home after signing permission forms etc, had a bath, some tea, and now Sam is happily tucked up dreaming of exploding caravans and tumbling 3-wheelers (and wearing his "anti-bad dream" bobble hat). When we did prayers tonight Sam asked God to look after Clare on her way back to London, he truly is my perfect little star. Spread the Word
