Today's the day that 40 horses bumble their way round Aintree racecourse, and 99% of people who bet on the race lose their money....

So have I placed a bet? Well, there's a horse called Simon (who calls a flippin horse a stupid name like that?), so I have a bet to win and also each way. In The Woolpack sweepstake Sam has a horse called Silver Birch and mine is Jack High. And here's the progress of my betting experiment:

Current Bets

New Zealand to win cricket World Cup; £1 @ 9/1; potential return £10

The Kiwis recently whupped the Aussies 3-0 in a one day series, in great form coming into the World Cup.

--------

New Zealand each way for cricket World Cup; £1 @ 9/2; £5.50

In case they slip up in the final!

----------

Andy Murray to win Sports Personality Of The Year; £1 @ 2/1; £3

It's a voting contest, Murray will appeal to the young ladies who make most of the votes in all these reality shows. May be in trouble if, somehow, Michael Vaughan wins the cricket World Cup with England (won't happen though).

-------------

“Simon” to win Grand National; £1 @ 16/1; £17

Gotta have a bet on a horse with my own name!

--------------

“Simon” to finish in first 4 places in Grand National; £1 @ 4/1; £5

Doubt that this will win, as the horse likes softer ground and Aintree is getting firmer all the time.

Lost Bets Since Last Update

Leeds United to lose against Preston on Friday; £1 @ 5/4; £3.25

Leeds United 2 Preston Nob End 1

---------

Justin Rose to win US Masters golf; £1 @ 33/1; £34

He came 5th, argh!

----------

Justin Rose each way in US Masters golf; £1 @ 33/4; £9.25

He came 5th, argh, each way paid out first to fourth! Close but no ceeee-gar....

Bets Won Since Last Update

Aussies to beat Windies and England to beat Ireland in Super 8’s stage of Cricket World Cup; £1 @ 1.32/1; £2.32

-----------

Leeds United to beat Plymouth; £1 at Evs; £2

Leeds 2 Plymouth 1

----------

Australia to beat England at Cricket World Cup; £2 @ 1 / 4; £2.50

Who can beat the Aussies apart from New Zealand?

Current State Of Play

Account £10.82

Potential Winnings £40.50

Will It Happen?

Absolutely no chance!
