Cucumbers

Make a refreshing drink from cucumbers!

Cucumbers Everywhere

Once again the glut factor creeps up - this time its half a dozen spare cucs.

Looked on web for suggestions - erm careful now with image results - and came across some attractive ideas.

Make a Cucumber Smoothie

Peel off the skin of and chop the cucumber into tiny pieces.

Blend it together with lime juice ,water and castor sugar.

Strain it and serve in chilled glasses - cocktail ideally.

Some say the drink can be made more interesting if soda is used instead of water. Myself I found it worked especially good with a nice slug of Tanqueray and additional Lemon

Bananas

The recent bout of HOT weather is playing havoc with the glasshouse speciality crops

Yes we have no Bananas, we have no Bananas today

Phew what a scorching past couple of weeks. Ever since the Bank Holiday the sunshine has been relentless and I've had the glasshouse ventilation up and down like a bride's nightie.

So much for my fancy ideas of growing bananas - they found it too much and ended it all.

As they say - the best fruit is local and in season - so a blackberrying I go.

Purple Haze - S'cuse me while I wipe the sides.

Scrumptious they may be but beware - the morning after can be a surprising lavatorial experience

Often overlooked beetroot are a doddle to grow - free of pests and disease - best used when no bigger than a cricket ball. Leave and inch of leaf stalks and the root tail on, pressure cook for ten minutes full power, skin, slice and add to sweetend water with a splash of vinegar to taste. YUM

This is a rather sweet site - Love Beetroot

After scoffing a good bowl of beets the next day can offer a real treat - indulge yourself in purple skids and splashes.

Surely only a matter of time before the log blog produces a detailed account of purple plopping.

Is it Burnt? No just a little Chard

Source: Green Fingers

Swiss Chard - easy to grow, tricky to distinguish.

The importance of careful plant labling came to light at the weekend when I was ordered to go fetch some rhubarb.

I returned with half a dozen sticks - "toxic" leaves removed and left them by the sink for the next stage of crumble prep.

On my return I was greeted by a kitchen full of faces streaming with tears or derision.

Well waste not want not. Cut the chard into inch long sticks and steam/boil. Tastes earthy and somewhat irony - similatr to spinich. In fact the leaves can be used as a spinich substitute.
