Exeter Prezzo

Soapbox time! Or 'How Prezzo in Exeter messed up Ben's stag weekend a bit'...

Time for a rare personal blog post - we work so hard at IMM towers that we don't get much time for these :)

Ben, itsmymarket.com's resident genius, had his stag party this weekend just gone. On Saturday night, we kicked off proceedings with a visit to the Prezzo restaurant in Exeter (early on, whilst still being sober and well-behaved I hasten to add).

I'd booked Prezzo because I've had some great meals there in the past. The booking this time was for 14 people so Prezzo required a deposit of £70 (£5 per head) which I paid on Thursday.

When our bill came at the end of the meal, the deposit had not been subtracted. If I was cynical, I might suggest this was a deliberate ploy to get more money out of parties who've had a few beers and wouldn't notice, but I'm willing to accept that this was a mistake. Nonetheless, if you take a large group in there, be careful that they don't make a similar mistake and end up taking a large amount of extra money from you.

When we pointed out the error to the head waiter, he was insistent that no deposit had been paid. I explained that there was a note of the payment in their bookings diary and asked him several times to look, but he continued to insist that I was lying. One of our group then reached across the counter and took the bookings diary, opened it up and found the note about the deposit. Rather than apologise at this point, the head waiter simply said "well, I guess you were looking for a reason not to pay your service charge, and now you've found it"!

I've complained to the company that owns Prezzo restaurants - I hope it does some good. But I am simply amazed that the head waiter could be so rude and so arrogantly determined that we were wrong even after he'd been proven wrong.

I'm quite disappointed and feel let down by the restaurant I'd selected for a good friend's stag weekend.

EDIT: 6th July, 2007 - Prezzo PLC have responded to my complaint.
