Source: Stevo101 Fed up of the queues, the cold weather and bad tempered shoppers? Do all your Christmas shopping from the comfort of your own home. Right, some people love shopping for christmas gifts, they like the hustle and bustle of the Big City, the lights, the sights, sounds and smells of hands-on shopping. I'm afraid I'm not one of them. The thought of being hurled into the melee of bad-tempered bargain hunters sends a shiver down my spine and I used to dread the approach of the festive season when I knew I'd have no choice but to once more enter the dragon... Ok, a bit dramatic I know, but I've always been somewhat claustrophobic when hammed in by a heaving thong. So you can imagine my relief at the advent of online shopping. I started out as most people do, buying the odd item of ebay or Amazon, then gradually buying more and more as I realised how easy, pain-free and generally cheaper online shopping actually is. I even do my grocery shopping onlline now, as the delivery charge is about the same as it would cost me to drive to the supermarket. But I digest...Now, there is one downside to getting your Christmas shopping done online, and that's the amount of trawling through websites you have to do. First you need to find the products you want, then you have to compare prices, which means you should really be looking for at least three different sites sellling the same goods. Right, this is where the "plug" happens. There are several price comparison sites springing up these days, basically allowing you to buy just about anything from one starting point and yes, I have one of these sites. It's oh-I-love-that.com the front page is all about wine and spirits, food hampers but if you use the search facility you can find anything from games consoles, sat navs, toys, clothes, home and garden ware and just about anything else you could think of. Give it a try and see what you think. I bought the site because I'm convinced these type of sites are the future of online shopping. Source: Stevo101 What is the most expensive bottle of wine in the world, and is it really worth it? So, how much can a bottle of wine be worth? And why do some collectors pay ridiculous amounts of money for something which will never be used for it's intended purpose? At the time of writing, the current world record price for a single bottle of white wine stands at £105,000. That's £20,000 a glass, or if you drink it like I do, £50,000. It's a 1787 Chateau Lafite, just in case you're wondering. The question is, why? Why would someone pay so much for a bottle of liquid which will no doubt be shown off to a few select friends and then locked away in a safe for however many years until it's sold on again. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not going to take the moral high ground and pontificate about how the money could be better spent on orphans or curing the sick. After all, people pay far more for works of art. But that's exactly what they are. Works of art, to be displayed, marvelled over and enjoyed, ie used for the purpose the artist intended. As far as I'm aware whoever made that bottle of wine probably intended for it to be enjoyed as a fine drink, and surely if the bottle is never going to be opened it may as well contain water. In fact who can ever be really sure what it contains unless it's actually drank? It's not like an oil painting by an "Old Master" that can be authenticated by an expert if it can never leave the bottle. To illustrate my point I'd like to mention an incident at a London restaurant earlier this year. A party of diners ordered a 1961 vintage priced £18,000, but upon delivery to the table the rich customer refused to accept the bottle, saying he believed it was fake as the cork wasn't stamped with the standard providence mark which would prove where and when it was made. The restaurant in question contacted an expert on that particular wine to see if it was genuine or if they themselves had been the victims of fraud, but the expert is quoted as saying that "it is impossible to confirm 100 per cent the authenticity of a wine pre-1964". So the customer didn't know, the restaurant didn't know and, indeed, the expert didn't know. To cap the story off nicely, the restaurant owner opened the bottle and found it was off anyway! I don't know about you but I'm going to stick to a nice Californian Red from a well known supermarket for £2.88 a bottle For wine at more realistic prices, visit www.fineforwine.com To comment on, or report this post follow the permalink aboveIs Wine Really Good For You?
Source: Stevo101 Can wine really be good for you? It's always been a somewhat controversial claim, and the debate rages on.. We've all heard stories about how a drop of red wine is good for the heart, but is this really true? Is it a myth perpetuated by the wine trade or does it really have magical, life -prolonging properties? After all, wine is of course an alcoholic drink and we all know alcohol is bad for you, right? Well, it certainly is if you drink too much. An estimated 60 people die each day in the U.K. from alcohol-related causes. Taken in moderation however, alcohol has been proved to do more good than harm. It helps lower cholesterol levels, improves blood circulation and lowers the risk of blood clots (just in case you're unaware, healthy alcohol limits are 3-4 units per day for men, 2-3 for women). So if it's the alcohol (in moderation) that has these health benefits, why is red wine singled out as the elixir of life and not all booze in general? According to scientists, red wine contains high levels of polyphenols, which are anti-oxidants said to reduce the risk of heart disease. The general rule is that the darker the wine is, the higher the level of polyphenols it contains, with wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes having the highest content. If we approach this theory from another angle though, it could be said that the wine, acting as an anti-oxidant, is merely cleansing the system of poisons we put in as part of an unhealthy lifestyle, and if we took more care in choosing our diets then the wine wouldn't really have any benefit as our bodies wouldn't be full of oxidants in the first place! So what of white wine? Until recently it wasn't reknowned for having any special healing powers but lately scientists have claimed that certain compounds found in white wine, such as tyrosol and caffeic acid, can act as anti-inflammatories, helping to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and arthritis. Some people will argue that all the evidence in favour of wine is circumstantial and the best way to stay healthy is to watch your diet and excercise regularly, and that is obviously a valid point. Whether wine does have mystical healing properties remains an open debate, but to me the value of wine is purely the pleasure of the drinking, which, (I'll state again, done in moderation) if it won't help you live forever it certainly won't do you any harm.
