Health and safety officials wasted £12,000 studying bath towels. The officials tried to find out as to whether laying your towel on the bathroom floor makes you more or less likely to slip.

But the 12 month study proved "inconclusive". The officials now want another £12,000 to fund another year's research.

Kevin Hallas, who led the DTI study has said ' If the floors not wet it may be better without a towel. We expected investigations to be more straight forward'
